Re: Classical music

^^^^rhowaldt, if you like the Goat Rodeo Sessions, you may like some of Ma's other works in that vein. Appalachian Journey and Appalachian Waltz were both done in a similar vein. Joshua Bell also did some similar work, called Short Trip Home. ^i believe a similar Tartini piece was posted earlier in ...

Re: Distros of interest

i've seen FreeBSD mentioned, but i've found Dragonfly BSD to have better hardware compatibility (though i admit the software availability is somewhat lower...they do mention that many FreeBSD ports will work with their system). i've installed Dragonfly on a system that wouldn't boot the FreeBSD or P...

Re: Russia

gypsy music inspired a number of folk styles, from western Asia, all the way to northern Europe. it's amazing to listen to, for instance, Irish music, and see the Gypsy influence.

Re: Russia

the closest i get to Russian folk is gypsy music...though i do love the Komuz. but that's more of a Mongolian-Russian folk instrument. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjvWIzhkaxY thanks for the listening material. if you like gypsy music, you might check out Gogol Bordello. they're a punkish take on...

stjerm

stjerm...i found this term on github, then realized it's in the FreeBSD pkg repo. it's a simple drop-down term, configured via an .Xdefaults file, much like the xterm or urxvt .Xresources. on the 32 bit Dell Latitude 2100 (10 inch netbook, atom processor), it runs around 17-19 MB RAM (10000 saved li...

Re: Classical music

^^^love the da gamba. this one is a bit of a genre jumper. The Goat Rodeo Sesssions was one of my favorite albums, when it was released. Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile (mandolin virtuoso), and a couple of great bass and violin players, to round out the group. they also use da gamba (smaller versions) in some...

Re: BOOK! (Hardcopy edition)

i'm currently reading The Last Man, by Mary Shelley, and re-reading The Wolf's Hour, by Robert R. McCammon. both are excellent, which is probably why i've read The Wolf's Hour 10 or more times, since i found it in high school. Snow Crash was excellent. i've been interested in checking out some PK Di...

Re: Classical music

Arensky and Glinka did some pretty solid trios, as well. if you can find it, the Oistrakh Trio plays Russian piano trios is a great collection.

Re: Classical music

^^the Tartini is certainly moving. i'll be listening for hours, thanks guys. i tend to prefer chamber music...smaller ensembles. ever since reading Kafka on the Shore, i've been interested in piano trios. Heifetz, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V5kAgcFUP8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPhfX...
