Re: grub rescue> grub_term_highlight_menu not found

I'm getting an error saying "Please enter device you want to install grub to (MBR). GTK-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" I'm using an Ubuntu 12.10 DVD because, well, it was what I had. For some reason every BBQ 64 bit cd I have refused to open, even though I've ins...

grub rescue> grub_term_highlight_menu not found

Ran a DU on a 64 bit system and grub borked. Gives the error shown in the title, looks like that's just a line somewhere in grub that should say something like color_highlight=black/white, but where it goes or how to edit from the grub rescue > prompt hasn't shown in any search I've done. I can chro...

Re: Can't DU due to Ruby

So..commented out all of /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10apt-listbugs. Tried DU, made it to 'setting up..' all the files, then crapped out showing; Errors were encountered while processing: console-common E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Then tried both of the "dpkg -i --force-all ...

Can't DU due to Ruby

Running 3.12-6.towo-siduction-amd64. Just tried a dist-upgrade, and it won't run, getting an error about: /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/debian.rb:24:in `require': no such file to load -- debian_version (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/debian.rb:24 from /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs:289:in `require' f...

Re: Coal: X crashes after DU

Crap. I did Google, but got a "Page not found" and thought Google drew a blank. Probably just my ISP doing it's usual outstanding job. And I was just going by Freedesktops' guide. So OK, I've now got /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "My Device Name" Driver...

Re: Coal: X crashes after DU

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf, in the Section "Device", change the driver to "openchrome".

Now if there was an example of how to do that in what is now a blank file, i'd do that. I haven't had much luck with just making up code.

DRIVER=OPENCHROME, maybe?

Re: Coal: X crashes after DU

Installed aptitude and then updated, and ran DU. Aptitude brought in xorg-server, and a a few other X files, looked like what I would install on a new system. Now startx gives me a screen with the top half static, and the bottom half booting into this forum page, although fuzzy/static looking. No mo...

Re: Coal: X crashes after DU

Edited /etc/default/grub and ran update-grub, then rebooted to the same no-X screen. Then edited grub using "e" at boot, again X failed. I'm posting this from the netbook that I'm having the problem with, using the live CD, and hoped to show a more complete lspci -nnk, but for some reason ...

There was no line in grub with init=/bin/systemd. In fact, no line remotely like it!

Coal: X crashes after DU

Just installed Coal, and after doing the first DU, X is borked. During the upgrade, I saw one of those "Package has changed. Would you like to install the new version or keep your old one?" and went with installing the new one. and that package was Openbox. I also saw that X installed what...

Re: Which spins update kernel using DU?

Thanks. My Trollinger install updates, didn't know whether any others. I checked Debian's kernel upgrade guide, was astonished to see so many options. Up to that pont, I'd always thought that a kernel was just one single, invariable thing. The Debian guide made me think that I'd stumbled into Gentoo!

Re: Grub won't install in Bass

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll probably just wait. And yeah, I keep giving it /dev/sda to install to, so that's probably what's happening. Just dug out a Bloat cd. I'll play with it and see what hapens. EDIT> Just installed Bloat, no problem. Took about 15 minutes, doing DU now. I forgot that Bloat h...

Re: Grub won't install in Bass

Nope, just installed it again as you said and it exited with the same error on grub. The first time I installed, I'd spaced out even needing a swap file, thought maybe that's why it was throwing the error. I don't think I ever specified where the swap partition was, although you're right about it sa...

Grub won't install in Bass[solved]

Just tried to install Bass on a new hard drive. Gparted made me make (If I remember what Gparted called it..) a partition table before it would format the hard drive. Did that, made an ext4 partition and a swap. Installed Bass, it gets to the end of the installation and tries to install grub. Grub e...
