I have read some of the crap about the "hostile takeover" and I still have no clue.

Re: Something to celebrate? Do it here!
^^ Of course you know that if those shoes were on clearance, they are probably discontinued and whatever they replaced them with won't fit you. If they had more than one pair, I'd buy another now while you still can. Not really a celebration, more like an event I guess. I euthanized my last cat righ...

Bullseye is getting ready for its first milestone in January, so I thought I should probably upgrade this box to Buster.

Re: /dev/null
At this point, as an old retired guy staying home during the pandemic, I need to check the calendar before I know if it's the weekend. I do have an appointment at the veterinarian with my 18-year-old feral cat tomorrow, so that should be interesting (I have to sedate him just to get him in a carrier...

Re: EDC, gadgets and gear stuff
Remember when Polar heart rate monitors (with the strap that goes across your chest) were the latest fitness thing? Fitness people love gadgets. And why do running shoe manufacturers have to come out with a new model (and discontinue the old) so often? Just about the time I find a shoe that works we...

Re: show us your iron
I can understand two monitors, but eight? You can't look at more than two at a time, and the rest would seem like just noise to me. But I have a smallish 4x3 monitor and don't even see the need for a bigger wider monitor. I just run everything full screen and switch screens when I want to see someth...

Re: show us your iron
Question -- I see the two-monitor setup, and I get that, but there is someone on the Arch forum trying to set up a single machine with 8 monitors. What kind of setup needs 8 monitors?

I never offered to suport this script. If you look at the code, yo...

Re: neofetch LinuxBBQ
Can't help with the colors, but what do you get when you try this in a terminal? cat /etc/os-release Most utilities use /etc/os-release to determine the running distro. From what I can tell in the incredibly complex neofetch code, it uses this and then does some fancy crap to make what it thinks is ...

I think stretch is oldstable until July 2022. I am not planning to upgrade my boxes until next year. https://wiki.debian.org/LTS But yes, if I was doing a dist-upgrade today I'd go to buster. And you're right that with every new Debian version systemd gets more intrusive and harder to remove. I don'...

Not as cool as Gekko (I am still trying to get into some ebooks I have on the early utilitarian philosophers, but they are slow going for me) I just finished this:

Re: TV series
^ Opinions vary widely. If you enjoy Kiefer Sutherland being a constant pissed-off badass and lots of scenes of torture, you will like it. Personally, I hated it and could not watch more than a few episodes. But I am not a series expert and hate most network TV.

I can always count on you guys to test KDE and remind me again why I don't use it... At this point my hands are so used to my ratpoison keybinds I don't think I could use anything else. I still have evilwm on a few test machines and I always have to think when I start one up and face the blank X scr...

Re: Upgrading kernel on accident, lol.
I am not currently running a BBQ spin, but for Debian stable, the most recent previous kernel is still available to boot in the grub "Advanced Options" submenu. If this is not the case for your spin, check your /boot directory -- the old kernel may still be there. If it is, you should be a...

Re: What's your uname?
OK I lied. It only takes 2-1/2 minutes to build htop on the Celeron, not 15. But it takes 78 minutes to build a kernel (the i5 box does it in seven minutes). I am really surprised I never cooked this thing running Gentoo and my kernel experiments on it. It runs flat out for hours and never complains...

Re: What's your uname?
It has absolutely nothing extra installed or running on it right now. Well, maybe tmux counts, but that's not really extra for me on a console system. When you build everything from source on a box this slow you ask yourself "do I really need this?" every time you install something. If hto...
