Nope, not dead yet!
Hey, hey fellow grillers! I know, I know, it's been forever, but between life, work and writing, I don't have a lot of time to get around anymore. But I do thank everyone for the latest birthday greetings. It's nice to be remembered even if I don't hang out like I used to. What's new? Not much. Stil...

Re: Adventures in Android ...
I must be a Luddite. My adventure in Android lasted a week before I went back to my flip-phone. Hanging up three times trying to answer the damn thing was the final straw for me.
Fortunately, the kid needed a new phone anyway, so she got mine, and everybody's happy.

Has it really been another year?
Thanks for all the birthday wishes (again). The older I get, the faster the time flies.
Did release another book in the meantime, changed jobs, played around with some distros, still on Slackware for now. I'll look at Debian again when Stretch releases.
Other than that, same old, same old.

I'm not dead!
Been super busy finishing up my latest book, but some time back I themed a spectrwm desktop using The Flash colors and logo. I use the -pixmap option of urxvt for the image because I want a new one in every terminal, and because I can. Palemoon is on desktop 1, and I do everything else in the comman...

Just a variation on a theme. I think I like this one better. The red background was a little meh, and I think I like the centered background better, too.
Same software, same terminal colors.

Re: launfal
nice one - looks clean :) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rob-Houglan/e/B007KA3186 ? LOL, Yeah, that's my first one. I published that, what, two, three years ago? It's up on archive.org as a free download. Every now and then I'll see a link for it selling at some ridiculous price, which is silly since they...

Re: good morning, good night
Hey all, Just a quick good morning to prove to the world that I'm still not dead. Another job move, latest book taking crazy amounts of time, and playing with Slackware-current leaves just about enough time to eat, sleep and grunt at the family. I'm not up to date on the latest, but I check up often...

I have lacipecsenye on a laptop I don't use much and I just did a dist-upgrade on that and it went without a hitch.

OK, I'm a patzer compared to the stuff you guys are doing, but I wanna be like the cool kids, so I'll start my own scrot thread. Slackware64-current evilwm dvtm rxvt-unicode-256color with terminus-16 font default theme with a solarized .dir_colors terminal and a browser, dmenu, xbindkeys, and vim ar...

Another week, and a day off!
OK, so I get to start the week with a holiday, courtesy of the US government. It's the last one til May, so I better party it up. Been playing around with other distros lately. Alpine was good until I tried to install X, then it locked up tight. And that was after I realized that their setup-reposit...

terminus-16 I don't remember why I started using it, but nothing else looks right now.

Re: Installer
I voted use UUID and create user account during install. None of the other stuff applies to me. Although I do use a separate /data partition, but home is just lumped in with root. If I need to reinstall, it's a quick restore, but my /data partition is getting a little too big to be copying back and ...

^ All I know about it is that it's a daemon that somehow handles syslogs. It's apparently more useful if you're using a raid array, but that's the extent of what I know.
It doesn't seem to be doing anything bad, so I've never had to learn much about it.

Re: Xresources/Xdefaults colors
OK, this one I didn't find on the web. I did this one myself this morning, and I wasn't looking at anyone else's paper while I did. I can't believe it's all that original, but it's pretty sharp, and as far as I can tell, it's totally usable. Mutt and Elinks are my two main testcases, but YMMV. This ...

Re: spectrwm
Here's my latest, which looks amazingly like the other recent ones I've done. Custom (this time I did it myself) xcolors, same Flash wallpaper, same Wheezy install. This could have easily have been ratpoison or I3, but I just like Spectrwm best. I've also decided that I'm totally digging monochrome....

Re: TTY Machine
I have a lappy that is TTY only simply because I can't stand the trackpad. I started using it that way starting with squeeze and have never had an xserver on it. I have X on the desktop, but I still TTY on that one a lot, too.

Re: Still around and around and around...
^ yeah, I tried that first. If you do a -vo help, the fbdev drivers aren't even in the list, and if you try to use one, it tells you that it can't find it. I thought I read somewhere that mplayer2 and mpv stripped put those drivers because they couldn't find anybody to maintain them, but I can't fin...

Re: Still around and around and around...
Quick update: Mplayer in Slackware just works. I have a feeling that the original Mplayer was ok, and they did something funky in Mplayer2 and removed the framebuffer drivers in MPV. Since Mplayer1 made a return in Sid, that could explain why the framebuffer drivers work there. Now I just need to bo...

^^ That's not the link where I found it, but sure enough, it's the same one. That's a bad job by me not finding out for myself that it had already been named. :/

Re: Still around and around and around...
^ OK, just installed Mplayer2 in Jessie and tried to play a video. With no video output specified, it plays the video in ASCII. -vo help shows a directfb driver, but when I try to use that, I get unable to open tty0: permission denied and I have to log out of the tty to get access back to the screen...
