i was about to post a classic wux thread here. then...
i googled around and found if one doesn't change an out-of-date partition in fstab (which can happen hopping about) all you get is a blank screen and emergency mode.... i commented out the offending out-of-date mount entry (cb in this case) and yay! back in! just wondered where and if i should write...

^ this is from a USB? - odd that sda1 is mounted...
are you going directly to the installer, not - for example - using files via thunar/filemanager before installing?

just thinking aloud here, have you checked the boot flag on your hdd?
(use gparted, rick click, flags - boot)
i guess that wouldn't affect a VM though.

have a gander at /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and look for any error reports.

still getting the login/out problem,
logs out fine,
try to login to default session (3d?)no joy,
this time going to 2d cinnamon in lightdm works ok but kills the background.

Great news, i timed my reinstall! well, i know Rhow's excited, officially the cinnamon install took 3.5 minutes! (taking into consideration my USB stick is quite slow, could of used a USB3 stick, and it was with a grub install, could of shaved a few seconds of there, and hang on... who the fuck care...

Stick works beautifully, must if been something i fiddled with before the install....
re my question about i915 I tried it on usb and i won't again. 8)
i think a quick re-install should fix it. if not...well i guess you'll hear.

#1 a 3d session? how do i change that? #2 will do. #3 i figured, I thought there could be a conflict. from the USB it was fine, i even changed the wall to something on a mounted volume. hmm maybe it was that, i mucked around with the USB, then installed. I'm thinking the install pulls the files from...
