Hi, it's been a while since i used synaptic, please make sure you have 'updated' it. remember installing it 'live' won't make it appear once you've installed.
i can assure you once she's installed, you can install anything from the sid repo's, which i can only presume includes what you wanted.

this happened to me, i think after i tried to install emerald...can't remember. anyway have you tried looking at the xorg logs? cd /var/log there are a bunch of Xorg. fies Xorg.0.log seems to be the current one. It might have an error, maybe the file/driver got moved... try typing startx as u$er mig...

quick question about grub2 [solved]
just a quickie, everytime i install a new spin, grub is installed on /dev/sda this changes the splash, boot order etc. everytime i get a grub update via apt-get, it does the same. how can i get it to stay with the one i like. (MATE spin) install grub again from that partition? from then on, not both...

sorry, that wasnt a compliant my end, my connection maxes out at 700-800k period, debian servers, commercial servers...anything - i meant it was blazing fast.

are you using network manager? if so, try maybe running CENI,... it will ask to disable network manager, do so and see if it works any better, i found apart from a lack of a status icon to be great - no complaining after lid down. if it's no better, simply run ceni again and at the bottom - activate...

ah you fixed it anyways!! i thought it might be a systemd thing as it mentioned systemctrl. emergency mode took ages, when it did it was still a blank screen, i got lucky that it showed up once. oddly on 'recovery mode' that some kind soul had thoughtfully put on the grub menu, ctlr-d just goes thro...
