Re: Mechanical keyboard?

I just picked up the Daskeyboard Ultimate S (the one without the letters on the keys), and I just love this thing. I thought I might have some trouble at first figuring out which keys are which, but after a couple weeks, I'm used to it. Of course, I got the clicky one. I don't remember which switche...

Re: Getting a new comp

@ wux: ROFL That was *exactly* my first thought when I was setting it up. But as for what I'll run as my daily driver, I haven't decided yet, but what I eventually want to do is set up a nice desktop publishing machine, and that's going to require some major bloat. I'm running Slackware in a tty on ...

Re: Getting a new comp

I've had better luck with Seagates over the years than WD, so this time I'm sticking with Seagate. I've got external drives from Seagate and WD for backups, and I'm filling USB keys with all my writing, so if the drive fails, I'm still ok. At the moment, I don't trust anybody's drives over 1TB anywa...

Getting a new comp

Well, for Xmas this year, I broke down and ordered myself a new custom build from a local computer shop. I'm tired of buying name-brand computers and crossing my fingers trying to figure out if they'll work with Linux, so this time, I skipped the middle step. I don't need high-end stuff, so I went b...

Re: I'm not dead!

Thanks all, especially for the birthday wishes. As dkeg said, life has been very lively lately, but I'm hoping that things will settle back down after the holidays, and I can get back to breaking my system on a regular basis. Although I should probably wait until this draft of the book is done. To b...

Fluxbox on Slackware 14.1

tin-black theme, dekeg's iron xcolors. It really looks nice after I used the ansi-universal dircolors I found somewhere.

I'm not dead!

These last few months have been busy for me, so I haven't been around much at all, but I figured I'd drop a note to quell the rumors of my untimely demise. Working on a new novel, trying to get some of my shorter work published in magazines, learning Slackware and Diaspora, dealing with family issue...

Re: Xresources/Xdefaults colors

Here's one that I just made, and it seems ok from just playing around with it. I'll need to use it a few days to find all the little niggles, but for now, it's pretty sharp. ! shining knight *.background: #160B0A *.foreground: #F4DCA6 *color0: #160B0A *color1: #2E100D *color2: #5583AC *color3: #6222...

Re: Xresources/Xdefaults colors

Using succubus pretty heavily for the last week or so, I discovered that colors 1,2 and 3 were just a little dark. I tweaked them all up 2 shades, and the scheme is now way more readable, and all the colors start in the same shade family. It's not a huge difference in colorview, but using programs l...

Re: NOX: Dirty Laundry (686) Release News

Just a quick update on how I've been airing my dirty laundry. Interwebz went out yesterday, so I fired up the USB and played around with the spin, and holy crap is this thing nice. So far, by favorite plugins are vim-lexical, vim lite-correct and pencil, and I got a lot of work out of them. A long w...

Re: Dirty Laundry, general question

^ OK. A quick web search explained the difference, so I understand that a little better. I don't need persistence, and at least now I understand why not. As for systemd, I don't know anything about it except Debian says it's good, and the haters say it isn't. The technical debate is over my head, an...

Re: Dirty Laundry, general question

I don't know where systemd comes from when installing hplip. I forgot to check what pulls it in, but on install, it deletes sysvinit-core, then installs systemd-sysv. It's a hard dependency of something, and until I understand what's going on with it, I'd rather wait until Jessie goes stable to figu...

Dirty Laundry, general question

I had to work today, so I only got a little time with it, but I'm off the next two days, so I'll be playing with all the shiny buttons. I do know that it runs great off a USB key, and the first updates went great. I do have a general question, though. It looks like powerline, airline and the vim plu...

Re: Git help

@ dkeg, thanks a lot for taking the time to put that together. I've printed it out, and I'll be working through it step by step to get a feel for how it all works.

Re: Git help

^ Funny you should say that (and thank you, by the way) because I've been trying to modify the Author setup for my own rig. I just don't have the time to do the modding I would like. My needs are simple, so a 686-nonpae no-x (xorg and 64-bit for writing? why exactly?) spin of author, without emacs a...

Author is a nice spin. I just had trouble with the wm's, but I plan on giving it another go at some point.
