Re: The Root of Samples

Like, some paintings are done with just a brush and some black ink on a white page but manage to conjure up a whole world... Anyway imho blues is complex and interesting. The subtle melodic nuances of the blues scale, accent, syncopation... "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.&quo...

Re: Random Password generator, with real words.

Thanks wux, some code in there I'll probably lift... Memorable but strong passwords have been an problem for everyone I guess. (I've got pages of random passwords written down, so if a burgular got physical access and figured out what they were for I'd be done I suppose.) Some people suggest pass se...

Re: The Root of Samples

@joe ... I guess there must be an awful lot of music you hate, in that case.

Generally, I like music to the extent that I can hear echoes of the blues in it...

Sri Lanka black tea every morning With pidsley on this. Ceylon tea is perfect for breakfast - dark, full-flavoured and quick-brewing. A pot every morning gets me awake, after a fashion, but I get by without coffee, or much other tea for that matter, the rest of the day. FWIW how I make (Ceylon, or ...

Happy Christmas!

It's already 0:45 in Japan so I get to be the first to say it - Happy Christmas everyone!

I'm not a Christian btw so any believers in other religions, please accept this as a generic wish for Peace on Earth and Happiness for All Beings.

Re: printfile

Just had a thought - you might consider using 'select' ('help select') for choosing the printer. Something like this?

Code: Select all

PS3='choose printer> '
select printer in $(lpstat -a | cut -d ' ' -f 1)
do
    [[ $printer ]] && break || echo 'invalid entry
'
done
$printer now holds the printer name.

Re: Meet the meat!

The last 10 or 15 years there has been a bit of an influx of Chinese from the mainland, and quite a few somewhat authentic Chinese restaurants appeared in Nagoya. Even so, they tended to adjust their food to appeal to Japanese tastes. The other day we heard of a place just a short bike-ride from whe...

Re: printfile

Just a question of style, I guess, but you can reduce the number of times 'echo' is called by using more linebreaks inside quotes. eg This

Code: Select all

echo
echo 'media size: '
echo "1 a4
2 letter
3 legal"
could be this

Code: Select all

echo'
media size:
1 a4
2 letter
3 legal'

Re: Post your Command line tricks

Another bash history tweak - make an ~/.inputrc file and put this in it: "\e[A":history-search-backward "\e[B":history-search-forward "\e[C": forward-char "\e[D": backward-char Now you can type the start of a command and press the up arrow to search history fo...

HISTSIZE=10000
HISTFILESIZE=10000
RAM=500MB
I sometimes use 2 or 3 terminals at once.
As I said, no noticable slowdown since syncing history. On a mains-powered desktop that extra unnecessary processing when running a command is not really costing me anything I guess?

Re: Post your Command line tricks

OK thanks.
To be honest, I haven't noticed anything running slower sice adding that history-synching code. Simple commands return pretty much instantaneously as before. Of course they might be taking an extra two or three milliseconds.
