Upgrade to newest Mate 1.8

Unread post by ivanovnegro » Wed Mar 26, 2014 12:04 am

Edit 2014/05/27: Mate 1.8.1 is now an official part of Debian (sid). If you want to install the whole suite then you can install mate-desktop-environment-core (minimal) or mate-desktop-environment (standard).

Mate 1.8 has finally new Debian packages. Though it is partially in Debian sid but not all components.
If you are impatient then follow me here. One thing I will say. At the moment I would rather recommend to stay with the sid packages because the transition should be almost over and some bugs will come with an upgrade of the third party repository but nothing critical so I tried it just for you. :)

Remove the old Mate repo from your sources list, then add the new one:

Code: Select all

deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/debian/ jessie main
Update your repos and install the new packages:

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extra
If apt wants to remove some automatically installed packages from before then either do not do an auto remove or install the removed packages again by hand, some of them have to go anyway. Look at the output.

Bugs I experienced: Mozo does not start and the shortcuts are still not fixed.

Have fun!

I might just do this. I feel all pointy and clicky again. Maybe add Compiz in the equasion for extra fat :P

EDIT: Whoah, only 91 MB to download! Gnome3 and KDE4 both need around 300 MB to download.

I did not try Compiz for years and I think it is rather dead in Debian sid. Though you can add Compton or use the built in compositor for some little bling.

^ That's what I did. Compiz has been pretty much borked for the last few years, even outside of Debian... At least on my hardware.

FWIW, (and as I think mentioned elsewhere) I am beta testing Makulu Linux Mate.

It is a debian testing 'distro' based on Mate 1.8 with Compiz and enough bling/bloat to satisfy/repel anyone.

It is running pretty well and I will happily use it on my main work machine when it is done.

[added]
It also has an install option to remove all the extra bells and whistles he has added (not tried that option myself yet).

(NB. the Makulu website is down till monday, and the Mate Beta is not openly available yet)

Compiz seems to be running pretty well under Mate 1.8 - nothing much broken that I am seeing.

You know, even Kwin works on it, I tested it. But then it pulls half of the other shit. Maybe I will write a how-to for noobs how to bloat their Xfce and Mate installs with it. :)

Ermmm... why not simply using metacity/marco or xfwm4? Or sawfish or Openbox or or or?

Or do I miss the point? I'm pretty sure Compiz does not exist in the Sid repos anymore (maybe not even in Stable). Okay, there's Unity as alternative for it.

^ Because bling. Otherwise, no reason to use Compiz/KWin..

You can of course follow the BBQ philosophy and install all the components you need by hand like I did without recommends etc.

Woot. Now to wait for the backports. :)
