Just to see what would happen, I decided to install the original Zijwaarts iso (from April 2014) and try to upgrade it to the current repos. Installed, apt-get-update and apt-get dist-upgrade; it wanted 320M of updates (almost as much as the original iso!). What the hell, let's see what happens. There were a few times when I was asked if I wanted files updated, and I simply selected the default. Eventually, the upgrade completed.
I'm not recommending this, and it's not supported, but if you are brave enough it just might work for you too.

thanks pids! guess it wanted to uodate /etc/issue*, /etc/bashrc and some other defaults. it's safe to overwrite these with new versions. :)
