Forget everything you read about fonts on Debian. To make them look normal, perfect, nice or whatever adjective you fancy, take a look at the Debian Wiki.

There is no magic, no mystery.
I would only recommend to set some variables:
- hinting should be slight
- antialiasing should be on and set to rgb
- dpi should be 96 on laptops, may vary
In every Desktop Environment you can tweak those settings or from the CLI. Though in Gnome use the tweak tool. It probably applies to Ubuntu's Unity, too, if that is what your heart desires but there the settings above are the default. That is why Ubuntu and Mint look good out of the box.
