I don't totally disagree and this had been a past discussion, but lets not forget about roaster. And other good web kit options like dwb and uzbl.

I kind of hate to say it but chromium does use a bit more memory but it is consistent and really not too bad. And good on cpu.

Oh, and here is a forgotten choice ... iceape! For a long time that was a favorite of ours. Light, stable, and fast.

^^ interesting. I haven't noticed any CPU issue with Pale Moon so far.

Suddenly CPU usage went up to 99% or so and stayed there. htop said it was palemoon. Probably one of my addons, or the combination with whatever web page I was on, but I don't remember that happening with Firefox or Iceweasel any time recently.

And yes the whole web has really bloated out yet again the last couple of years - javascript, flash... but even noscript, adblock and flashblock don't seem to help that much. It wasn't that long ago that 500MB of ram was plenty to have a dozen Firefox tabs open.

Time to get a "new" box I guess >sigh<

I liked dwb. A lot of keys to learn, but I'm a sucker for keyboard driven. Memory usage was higher than with IW, but I'm thinking that webkit itself is a memory hog.

I wanna try Roaster. I might install the dependencies and give it a whirl. All I do know is that I'm done with the standard graphical browsers. If that means there's parts of the web I can't surf, so be it.

Although it's not open source, I've been getting a lot of use from Opera 12.16 (before the Chrome-ing of Opera). It's actually a right fine browser.

^^ Last time I used it must be 5 years ago when I was developing web apps and I needed to check if they were working on different browsers. A pleasant experience, I must say.

okay, I remember now, opera requires too many dependencies. I dpkg's fine, although with errors. And works fine, but no better memory consumption wise than the other monsters. But on upd, get failed dependency errors. Just a hassle with no return. so I got rid of it.

^ I can't say I've ever used it on any Debian-based distro before, but I've been making it a standard install on my Slack systems for a while now. I find it much faster than FF, and just as capable. I don't much like Opera bookmark management, but it's not intolerable. I have to admit, I have a bit of a browser fetish, and tend to collect them: on the T61 here, I have FF, Dillo, Chromium, Netsurf, Opera, links, and lynx. :D

Does Opera still receive security updates for the Linux version?

ah, interesting point, that's right I forgot about that, when new releases were not available for Linux. It looks like the versions are close. Windows is 12.17, Linux is 12.16. Not sure if that means necessarily that would include security updates.

They are not doing any further Linux versions, 12.16 is the last. Don't know about security updates, good point.

Apparently, the dependencies for Opera are already met by a base Slackware installation, because there are no further dependencies for the SlackBuild:

Wtf happened to the new Chrome version? The interface looks like they copied the ugliness of Gtk3. Now it uses again its own folder icons and an ugly yellow for text even with your Gtk theme set.

I tried Qupzilla, was really not bad.

^^ I would love to see Midori succeed, but it is always crashy for me, regardless of version, regardless of distro. Aside from that and webkitgtk, it's a pretty neat browser.
