Void, FreeBSD, or Arch OpenRC... i'm learning Slackel, but have little experience with Slack outside Slacko Puppy.

Void and BSD are my alternatives too. About no experience with Slackware either.

I made kinda adipositas (a bit stripped down) clones both on Void and OpenBSD. The NOX Void system running a framebuffer is darn excellent. Feels smoother and more glitch free than the original adipo or the BSD attempt.

I'd go with either Slack, BSD, or CRUX. Just for a change of pace. I think a noX CRUX with all the bbq goodies would be pretty sweet. Same with Slack. I've been tempted to try BSD for ages, but still haven't gotten around to it.

Well, the documentation is fairly exhaustive and if you are comfortable with Slackware/CRUX, you will almost certainly feel comfortable in a *BSD. If you consider giving it a try, the FreeBSD handbook is a wonderful place to start.

MB tossed up a great How-To on installing FreeBSD alongside your GNU/Linux paritions. http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1060

I have a few spare partitions on my laptops. I was considering putting FreeBSD on my old desktop to see if it fits me. I'm not really experienced with CRUX, either, but I really like the philosophy and way of doing things. I think I'm gonna take the plunge this weekend.

Switched to OSX full-time and ported the BBQ tools that I need and love. Emacs with org-mode for everything. brew for the nice CLI tools. I simply don't have the time and energy to DIY anymore in the daytime, and in the evening I just read an ebook or listen to audiobooks or radio. The inspiration might come a bit later this year, maybe.

Thank you for the time you put into BBQ Julius and for the knowledge you have shared. I learned more here than the 25 years I spent using Linux all the best.:)

No, not April 1st. So it's true then? aw man..., thanks for everything MB.
I too learned a lot from this community, and like what others said you're the man. :)

Hahh, thanks. Of course I'll stay with the BBQ, and the question is actually "What *if* there's no Debian" -- still running BBQ on 5 laptops, notebooks and desktop PCs in the house, so the grill stays hot, I promise.

Screenshot? Oh well...

as i've confessed to Jules during his short honeymoon: i've been back on Win7 for some time. it got this way due to an Xorg update that didn't work with my shitty Radeon shit. it turned out to be convenient as i just got the new teaching job and would need Word and Excel on a regular basis. Now, LibreOffice Writer, okay. LibreOffice Calc? Fuck that shit, i need Excel, i have tried and tried and just can't get used to it.

honestly enjoying it, always liked Win7 for what it is. what i do miss: moc, and cli filemanagement. As Jules pointed out, I could go the Cygwin route. will see what happens. Need to decide soon, as the tiny amount of Gb I had allocated to Win7 is filling up quickly :)

Some big surprises here.

See what happens when Linuxers have enough money, they switch to Mac. :D

The question for me would be if not Linux..., then I think in my case it would be a Mac,too. It just feels more general than Windows.

Now Rhow, let us see your screenshot. :) How does a griller set up his Win7 machine?

There definitely are some surprises here. I guess once the beard gets long enough, it does not matter what you use!

I have been playing with FreeBSD lately. I do not think I can use it right now because I need Docker (containment system) for a school project and was having trouble with setting it up. I like ZFS, but was not too happy that FreeBSD Docker relied entirely on ZFS.

I am probably going to be installing Gentoo when I get home from work today. I never really gave it a full go.
