Which, except of coreutils, is your favorite TUI file manager? Pick up to 2!

If not in the list, pick 'Others' and post it :)

Dired
Obvious choice. The only file manager I use, the only TUI file manager that has seriously taken over coreutils in my daily workflow.

Second place goes to mc. I had good times with it.

I have been using ranger for a while, but these days i'm using vifm more and more, even though I still have ranger around :)

Ranger is a nice one, too, it's just a bit too 'eavy.

^ Yeah, I agree also I found it used alot of IO when browsing fast, perhaps because of generating previews ? But I have the python bloat here anyway :)

Yes, that's true. An idea would be using feh as previewer instead of w3m-img, and turning on its -P option -- haven't tried it yet, but should work OK.

^ The IO issue not only exists when browsing through a directory of images but also when generating previews for normal directories or file, though that is one of the reason why I have kept ranger so I didn't turn this feature off and see if the issue still exists.

Well the preview of files is definitely the part that generates a lot of action behind the scenes. What's your terminal emulator? Tried aterm or stterm already?

I don't know, I guess ranger and vifm. I won't vote b/c mainly used from habit. I don't really have a true preference.
I voted for ranger and vifm

I voted mc, because it is easy enough for me to use, it can do lots of stuff,
and I love the "shell link" function, to steal configs and stuff from other machines.
I guess it it sort of like ssh, but... I just like it.

I guess I don't have a favorite TUI file manager other than coreutils, anymore. Based on gekko's "mini-review," I will have to try dired.

EDIT: Oh, I see. dired is a directory editor for emacs. Probably not, then. :)

forgot to add 'gitfm' from the gnuit toolset, that's the default FM in latest BBQ's. It's okay for rudimentary tasks, but nowhere as comfy as MC (which is my personal fave)

Voted mc, but have stayed with the latest default on BORK!

so, I really like ranger's interface but I don't like its bloat.

lately I've been using netrw (vim's default file manager plugin) per a tip (http://is.gd/tDKwCB) from bayberry. The best part is that if you use vim you don't have to install anything or learn a new tool. Just

Code: Select all

vi /somedir
.

cool!

honorable mention: lfm.
