Some play with Ubuntu 17.10 and I already had the newest kernel on one test machine running something unusual:

Did a dist-upgrade to move the NFS server (an ancient P4) from wheezy to stretch.
Code: Select all
Linux oldman 4.9.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.51-1 (2017-09-28) i686 GNU/Linux
Took a little coaxing to complete the upgrade, and I was surprised to see that it did not force me to install systemd (left the init at sysvinit). When I dist-upgraded my main machine from wheezy to jessie last year it did force systemd, so either they changed something or I got lucky.
Code: Select all
$ env-info
pidsley@oldman
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)
Uptime: 0d 0h 1m
Shell: /bin/bash
Init: sysvinit
Disk: 1.1G / 5.7G
Mem: 33M / 497M
Kernel: Linux 4.9.0-4-686-pae i686
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70GHz

^ interesting, we mostly pin back it when doing a dist upg from an old box. Maybe it's now the default
