@ivan, thanks for the 'nudge'. Liquorix is working pretty nicely on the Thinkpad. Using the pae version. The fan has quieted and temp generally hovers in the mid 40'sC, give or take

Edit :

Code: Select all

Linux Ruby 4.2-4.dmz.1-liquorix-686-pae #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Debian 4.2-9 (2015-10-23) i686 GNU/Linux

Linux rrhizal 4.3.3-towo.1-siduction-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT siduction 4.3-6 (2015-12-15) i686 GNU/Linux

Rebooted ye olde work battlestation today after installing this kernel... had to install xorg and rxvt-unicode-256color and run smxi to get everything working again. Apparently I've been using my machine for the past 10+ days without xorg or urxvt installed? Unpossable!

doubledutch, it makes sense. check the dependency tree of the xorg package (which is a meta-package), there you see a dependency on some terminal and a dependency on xserver-xorg, which in turn depends on xserver-xorg-video-whatever. So, you can remove xorg, add xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-yourcard with xserver-xorg-input-* and get the smallest possible dependency mess with still a working system.
