Do you even stream?

Unread post by GekkoP » Tue Jun 30, 2015 9:09 pm

I don't know if any of you stream video/audio files regularly over his/her own network, but I do.
My setup is fairly simple: Fedora 22 with Universal Media Server -> PS3 -> Display.

While I know some of you just watch everything on their huge monitors, I am just curious: do you stream? Which streaming software do you use?

I'm looking for an alternative setup. :-)

Old Raspberry Pi and openelec for me. with a recuperated 1.5tb ext hdd. HDMI direct to the plasma ;)
can use kodi to stream to device. That's quite cool.

minidlna setup here wired > Blu-ray player > HDMI > Plasma.

I also use a Chromecast from phone or tablet for streaming web content.

You know I am not sure about that. I have been using it for a few years and it streams everything my player can handle. I took a look at some of the movies sizes I have watched and they are all around 1.5G .mkv

I will test...

^ Thank you.
I tried different streaming programs: Universal Media Server, PS3 Media Server, mediatomb, rygel and now minidlna. None of them can play files bigger than 2GB. Maybe it's something related to my LAN, have to check.

Anyways, all of this software works absolutely fine for smaller files.

Manu, check with "ulimit -a" in Fedora if there is a file size limit. Just out of curiosity: is there a FAT16 involved somewhere? Does the same happen when you stream from a 64-bit Linux? LFS should actually be supported already in the kernels and libc. I only know 'old' NFS limits to 2GB.

^ Thanks.
ulimit -a shows unlimited for file size, and there is no FAT16 involved. I'll try with 64-bit, hadn't think of that.

Could it be the PS3?
8. Sets the video codec to use when transcoding. Xvid files will be split in 2GB segments as the PS3 requires - I recommend you leave this on x264 for best quality/compression.

Edit, maybe so:

^ Could be, weird though. PS3 is FAT32, that's for sure.
I guess I'll have to compress those 4GB files somehow. :)

^ maybe test it by streaming to something else? I was thinking - how could streaming be affected by file size, surely it just keeps coming...
what happens, does it just stop?
jeez it's like back to 2CD video rips...

It simply doesn't show the files on the PS3 saying file not supported (which is weird because they are mkv like the others)

Confirmed was able to play a 2.8G .mkv no problem.
