RE:ROADMAP:2016 Releases Discussion

Unread post by archvortex » Sat Mar 12, 2016 5:14 am

Thread opened for discussion and comments on this post ROADMAP:2016 Releases

I think this is an awesome idea for personal usage and hopefully will also encourage the community to produce and share their own RYO versions. Machinebacon has already put a call out for members to submit their RYO for the RYO:Greatest Hits using Jessie and will add tested submissions to the Sourceforge repo. The Greatest Hits release notes (README) contain instructions to help keep your projects unbloated if you're looking to share with the community and follow the BBQ Philosophy.

Personally, I use Anorexia for the base to build off of for building BBQ partitions on my boxen. Anorexia is a great starting point for building NOX and X personal projects.

The LinuxBBQ Lab is the place to get ideas of what to add to your creation.

Go to NOX:Professional (586) for instructions on how to build from a NOX environment. I believe that x11-utils is deprecated or moved into another package now as I got an error yesterday trying to install it.

BBQ Configuration files, tools and stuff can be found at the LinuxBBQ GitHub

So get off your asses and get grilling!

Mods, please move this thread to the appropriate place as I don't have rights to post in Polls. Cheers!

re x11-utils, it installs/upgrades fine in sid (2016-03-12) v7.7+3, maybe there was a problem with the mirrors.

Yeah, probably my Indonesian mirror because they might be dicking around with it. It was so slow on Thursday afternoon. I made three new installs of Anorexia yesterday, one with LXDE for my kids, one for me with spectrwm and cwm, and one with fluxbox and systemd, and all three installs gave me errors with x11-utils. Crappy Indonesian mirrors but kambing.ui.ac.id provides fast downloads when it is working. :D

Would you mind to open a new thread in the SUPPORT section, and pasting the exact error message? Thanks.

x11-xserver-utils not x11-server-utils. DOH!!! Reinstalled my spectrwm partition just to test and that was the problem. Aside from PEBKAC error, I love to use Anorexia as a base.

Hi Julius

I applaud your idea for no x in Sid releases the hassles with bugs makes it not worth it and I like the option to build from a barebones system. So stick with that vision it is the right way to go for LinuxBBQ.

^ I totally agree. Besides that, there are many recipes to find in this forum, so grilling shouldn't be a problem :)

Hello everyone,

All roads lead to Adipositas as far as I am concerned.

I like and applaud the idea of no X Sid spins only. The BBQ releases will be flawless this way. If anyone wants to struggle with the Xserver bugs it's up to him (me). IMHO, the X and Jessie are way better play mates than the X and Sid. Or at least that's my experience.

cloudyskies, Adipositas is designed to be a noX desktop with all the good stuff, but maybe also some stuff you probably don't need (for example, a few TUI browsers, or the bunch of TUI file managers). Actually, the Anorexia release would be most recommended for a lean "put X on top later" release for RYO if users don't really plan to stay in TTY forever :)

Thanks to everyone who responded so far, it is good to see that taking the bloat out is actually more wished than adding shit on top :) I will try hard to make the BBQ experience as positive as possible.

That is why I really like Adipositas...it is just packed with good stuff, most of which I don't need and many of which I yet to even understand. I am still learning you know :O) I actually like ranger a lot and I am just now learning to use it exclusively. Did all the stuff to it I learned here at the grill like pic/webpage preview....ect. It was a toss up between ranger and vifm for me but I tried them all out. Gotta love Adipositas for testing tui file managers alone :O)

It is just really very, very cool to use a noX desktop and play with all the stuff because it really forces me to learn alot about linux. But you all already know that. Soon I hope to be able to put something together with Anorexia just like Adipositas and make a i3wm setup too. At least that is my plan. I like the idea of learning to grill my own meats and I learned to really appreciate getting rid of bloat. This is just great fun and thanks for having me at the grill. I like the direction Linuxbbq will take in 2016 and can't wait. Anyway, sorry for gushing about myself.

Thanks everyone!!!!

MB, I hadn't realized I didn't chime in. I totally agree. Supply a solid base, allow users to create their own. So definitely applauded.

That's the best way to learn. Build from a base. Then you can add only what you need when the need arises, and you can learn without a lot of excess clutter. :)
Sir! Put down the hammer and slowly step away from the computer.

I just want to mention that i'm gonna miss the nice X desktops you created.
I know i can install and configure it myself, and i have, but i can never get them as clean and smooth as you guys have.
