+1 to all of that. Simple and straightforward. That's all this distro really needs, is just two base flavors (32bit and 64 bit ;) along with the script to customize as much or as little as needed. But of course it doesn't mean we have to stop the special editions completely. You could still dish out a few if you want just for the fun of it...to show examples of what can be done with a particular desktop environment/window manager.chris wrote:I find the approach with a base ISO and a script menu very well.
My ideal vision is:
1 Install a sid-based iso with the normal live-installer from Debian.
2 Upgrade the whole system and reboot.
3 (Auto) run a script to install the software.
4 All your special flavors can be there as meta-packages (eg xfce-environment, i3wm, cli-only, libre-office, all-media codecs, only-free media codecs, etc.). There are no limits for further ideas...
You have a choice: install the software package for packages manually, or install some meta-packages, or mix both ways.
And you don't have to build dozens of spins to fit all needs.
This would be my favorite way. The sexiest way.
Cheers,
Chris
PS:I realy like that! ;Drhowaldt wrote:how about putting some sick music underneath those menus. :D
To turn off the music, you have to solve a puzzle. :)

Re: BBQ Democrat - Pre-Installed Applications
^ We'll find a healthy (or unhealthy) mix of base dishes and bloated, special stuff. After all, it's all just a hobby and if I can make just one person happy/satisfied with a special release, I am happy. The biggest problem is not the workload, but ... the time. 24 hours a day is simply not enough :)

Just a hobby?
That's like the NASA guys saying they went to the moon for 'something to do on a Sunday afternoon, after the footie'
You've certainly satisfied me with your special releases ;-)

^^Yeah no complaints here...cool things are happening. I think you really need to steal the slogan from DistroWatch.

As long as you have fun, build a few dozen more - I have a TB of storage reserved only for VMs, there is still space! :-)machinebacon wrote:^ We'll find a healthy (or unhealthy) mix of base dishes and bloated, special stuff. Bacon, this is what I originally imagined... A wonderful RYO script and a bunch of CLI apps to build your own environment from the ground up. Glad to see it come to fruition
The screenshots already look promising. I was expecting the looks of smxi but this will do well too. Here's a toast to your efforts. :-)

Re: BBQ Democrat - Pre-Installed Applications
Thanks Victor. The RYO script is already alive (see flavours "Bloat", "XFCE64", "CLIt" and in the Darkside/Lightside/Penbang spins)
