[POLL] 64-bit Christmas Gift Time

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Nov 11, 2013 4:34 am

So, which base should get a 64-bit for Xmas? You can pick from any of the i686 releases or from the 'old' amd64 releases, or one of the listed Base release ^ up there.

Note: remastered 64bit releases won't feature gtk3-apps (but gtk2-apps whenever possible) or a login manager. This is due to the BBQ Philosophy.

If you pick one of the "Base" releases here, it won't feature gtk apps at all ;) The dwm base would include build tools, libraries and the source.

Of course you can post a special edition wish.

The poll expires on December 12.

You guys taught me the 4GB-on-32bit trick, now I can't decide!!11!!

Seriously, though, not an easy poll. Can't decide between dwm and i3. I'll think about it.

I give the "charity" vote to OB, because that's what it seems most people who don't roast their own want.

In this case I give my charity vote to i3 or dwm, just for the sake of it :D

Right, enough with the thinking: i3.

You are such an egg, rho ;) I bet my shaved prune that you have not even tried the 32-bit version of dat Window Maker.

If gekko says i3, I say spectrwm. Maybe.

I voted "other" -- I'd like to see an LXDE release with a fully populated Openbox menu, themed like Cookies or PonyMuncher, with both sessions in .xinitrc and one simply commented out. Here's why:

1. Most new users seem to want a 64-bit Openbox release. This would give them what they want, plus LXDE for those who also want that. A hybrid release should stop most of the whining.

2. As soon as you release it, I will port the menu to jwm and upload a .jwmrc with instructions for adding jwm.

3. Adding i3, spectrwm, or just about anything else is simple. Here is the postinstall script for spectrwm:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install spectrwm

Pidsley made several valid points, and the thread has run its course ;)

Actually there could be two LXDE sessions - one with lxpanel, one with tint2.
Love that post-install script. A bit nerdy, some wacky keybindings there, but doable for a new user :D

Yep, LXDE would be another fine choice. Still in love with Coal.

^ too hard :D foggy, don't you add pekwm-themes? ;)

Seems the good people of the grill only need something like Pony Muncher in 64 bit, plus the lxmenu-data entry in openbox' menu. Easy ;)
