Mate, show me your screenshot!

Some recent Mate experiments. Made it look like in the old Gnome 2 days, very easy, very functional.

Thanks to Bacon for the sky scrapers.

MATE is comparably light, quite like XFCE4 in RAM usage. Nothing like GNOME3. You can shave off a few MB (both in XFCE and MATE) by disabling some of the (nice) panel applications, like the weather applet.

MATE is slowly dripping into sid, still waiting for Caja and Marco and the actual MATE session. Until then, simply add the Jessie repos for MATE, it does not break anything on your normal install (all MATE packages are either called mate-... or just like the actual packages, like atril, eog, caja, marco)

http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download#debian_jessie

It's a nice desktop, really.

^ Exactly what Bacon says.

It is just like Xfce and I swear, on Debian it uses the same if not even less RAM than a full blown Xubuntu session. I totally recommend it if you are in need of the traditional Linux desktop.

Every time I boot into Mate I see how no-nonsense Gnome 2 was.

/Rant continuation of Kexo's points:

Why bother with Pantheon, Mate is top notch, it does *exactly* what it says on the tin and comes almost ootb without any unneeded stuff, even when you install the full upstream package unlike Gnome Shell and KDE.

/Rant off

Mate 1.8 is also on its way and I saw, you can even run the dev packages on Debian (or other distros) if you want.

It seems they push 1.6 for now, but I'm sure once it's in Sid it will jump versions more frequently. As usually, one reversion back. :)

Ok, that is a bit sad. Though I can live with Gtk3 support, already installed on my main machine.
As I understood the Mate guys maintain two versions of Mate, one is Gtk2 only and the other supports Gtk3. But I think Debian will change that to Gtk3 automatically like usual.
That means you would have to use Gentoo or to compile it from source to be Gtk3 free. :D

Or they really just take libsecret, *or* the user simply does not install the keyring tool. Hope they indeed keep one version free of gtk3. At least until gtk3 works normally :)

Mate is quite nice. I get the impression it's ultimately doomed so don't bother with it anymore. What do I know tho? . . . I'm retarded.

All that minimalism, give me some bloat. :) Still working with Mate very much from time to time. Of course rocking Drew's colors.

I am beta testing the soon to be released Makulu Linux Mate version.

It is fully blinged-up with compiz etc, and really very pleasant to use.

I installed it on my Advent Netbook, which is the slowest PC I have, and it installed in 216M and ran sweet as a nut.

Bit of a shocker TBH, I had been avoiding Mate as a boring dead-end desktop.

yeah, man, I hear ya. The reason I installed FED20 was for gnome3 .... hahahaha. but I get bored pretty quick. I just have it as one partition for an option. Plus I got cwm and hlwm going on there too. Goal is to do minimal Fed install. Right now my bling is chromium and compton.

Anyway, sorry, veered off course.

Nice set up DD. What city?

Old school layout. I love this desktop when I want something fully featured.

OK, I just had to try this. Don't ask me why.

Image

It's actually quite usable, but it does not perfectly suit my needs.

@Oppenheimer: quo vadis? ;) GNOME3 is around the corner ;)
