Nice shot.
I've been using Fedora 21 with LXDE as my media server for months and I have to say it is pretty solid. Not bleeding, but enough up-to-date for what I need on that PC.

I think it's the eos theme, right? At least the windecs. Nice scrot, though Fedora didn't really do the trick for me (and yesh, I tried to love it) :)

Wow, some great MATE scrots, guys. I might have to try a Slackware/MATE setup, there's even a convenient binary build for it:

Icons are Flattr (you were correct; common theme now days), the wall is from 8ch.net/wg/ and it is real (!) and then the GTK theme is Smoothly-Black by NiceandGently :D

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys! I might have to try MATE on Slackware/Salix, as it seems to be a real solid DE.

^ I do like Arch quite a bit (or perhaps it's just pacman!), and return to it frequently, until I break it and then go back to the basics. I probably just have too many machines to experiment with.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10, lovely bloat. I have to admit, I even like it for what it is. Feels like Ubuntu back in the golden-brownish days, nearly a decade ago.
I won't install it though :D

It is a great distro and yes it feels like home, when I first started with the Gnome 2 desktop and Ubuntu.

But as you said, I rather prefer a more minimal approach nowadays, running Mate on Debian sans all the bloat from Ubuntu and it is snappier.

Absolutely, you can get the mate-desktop-core (I think that's the name) and stay with sysvinit, connect with ifup and mount they other drives in fstab. And then ... go back to spectrwm half an hour later :D

I see, that there are also Ubuntu Mate users, so I paste my old scrot (from January 2017, actually, this was my last contact with desktop linux so far, because I was then busy with my studies, writing thesis, blah blah, and then I had to switch to Wingdowz) (and btw yay, my first scrot on linunxbbq forums! \o/ )
Not changed a lot, I used paletterx to customise my console colors to fit wallpaper more, I like the default gtk theme from ubuntu though, I could customise it more, but had no time.
Opinions, advices anyone? I probably come back to MATE, I like the feel of that DE.

Actually I also like the default Gtk theme in Ubuntu Mate. On Debian I always use Blue Menta, even Clearlooks-Phenix. I am just old school.

Yeah, good default theme in Ubuntu Mate (actually, I did really install it and I am writing from it now - of course I switched to spectrwm/XFCE4). My theme of choice, if I had one, is Numix Red. It's in the repos of 'Buntu, at least for YY.

Oh yes, advices:
- remove zeitgeist [1] and avahi-daemon [2] (if you don't need them)
- also kick cups-* (if you never print)
- remove bluez and bluetooth-whatever (of course, if you never use bluetooth)
- remove modem-manager [3]
- kick whoopsie, apparmor and ufw [4]
- as root,

Code: Select all

echo "vm.swappiness=0" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
- as root, edit /etc/default/grub and set

Code: Select all

GRUB_GFXMODE=text
and then update-grub2
- I also check "pstree" and remove shit like anacron/cron/ntpdate or anything that ticks in the background and seems unneeded
If I got more, I add later :)

[1] zeitgeist is tracking your recent documents and changes and stuff, so it's always indexing in the background
[2] avahi-daemon's only useful feature is detecting changes in the network.
[3] seriously? :D
[4] well, a firewall is always as good as the person who configured it
