^ just trying to be distro-agnostic ;) Next is Fedora Xfce. When I have hardware that can run GNOME3 I will try it, for at least a few minutes...

Fedora OOTB quite requires some hardware, it's always around 25% higher in RAM than with Debian, from what I've gathered so far. Probably the services in the background. Keep us updated anyway :)

Sweet Pidsley. I love Gnome 2. :)
Yes, Fedora has some background processes nobody (of us) needs.

Trying out Mate. Might switch out the panel to tint2, but it's pretty good. Using Compton for compositing.

A nice bonus for me with Mate is that Source games play much better with it than with some WMs (meaning they don't crash when I alt-tab)...

^ welcome :)
@dkeg: thanks :) it's actually pretty nice, a lot like Xfce, but I like it better. I just miss some of my keybindings (to maximize a window for example).

kex, from the git page:
Change keybindings for example:
mateconftool-2 --type=string --set /apps/marco/global_keybindings/switch_to_workspace_1 '<Alt>F1'
Also try the MATE keyboard shortcuts control panel, or
mateconf-editor.
See marco.schemas for all available bindings.
So, find the 'global_keybindings' for maximizing (might be 'maximize_window') and change it in mateconf-edit or so ;)

^ mate-conf is deprecated, you have to use dconf or from the command line.
From dconf:
org -> mate -> marco
And in reality it should be even easier with Mate Control Center and then going to the keybindings but it does not work here since Mate 1.8.

Ah sorry. Got it from their github. I thought it gconf/dconf is nothing else than mateconf. Anyway, kex probably knows what I originally meant. HOPEFULLY :)

^ I do, and thanks. Kinda weird that Mate uses dconf-editor when it's a GTK3 application :)

MATE 1.8.1 here, and it runs like a dream on this old little netbook. Yes, it is the new and improved init system. And yes, this is gtk3. Ibus is running for Chinese input, and I am not drunk: the applet shows JP because this NEC netbook is a Japanese import and has a Japanese keyboard layout (which drives me crazy) :)
Anyway, MATE gets my Bacon Approval Stamp. Great DE.
Numix Darkened theme, urxvt replacing mate-terminal, the PDF viewer is Atril. MATE-Faenza icons, wallpaper from Idontknowhere ;)
