Compiz

Was quite shocked to find that even 14.04 still uses Compiz:

Code: Select all

ubuntu-kylin@ubuntu-kylin:~$ apt-cache policy compiz
compiz:
  已安装: 1:0.9.11+14.04.20140409-0ubuntu1
  候选软件包:1:0.9.11+14.04.20140409-0ubuntu1
  版本列表:
 *** 1:0.9.11+14.04.20140409-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
ubuntu-kylin@ubuntu-kylin:~$
Anyway, here's a scrot - Ubuntu Kylin 14.04, running really well on this old T43 (and not at all on the desktop with nVidia GeForce 6150)

Apart from that, I must say that 14.04 is really an improvement. Going to install it as fallback ;)

I think Unity is still just a Compiz plugin, so in theory you can disable it to have a Compiz standalone session (seen somebody on deviantart do it, wasn't 14.04 though).

Out of curiosity I downloaded LinuxDeepin 14, which is not even bad (if you don't run it on too old hardware). I just post a few scrots of this and that (Control Center, App Store, Game Store, Media Player, Network Manager) because I guess most (if not all) of you will never try it ;)

yeah it is really a bit too much, but i can understand what they try to achieve -- typical 'user desktop', 'everything works OO ze B'. when using it, i felt totally limited :/

Linux releases for the Chinese market seem to be very... colorful. I think that must be an Asian thing, generally speaking. They seem to like bright colors.

But I give Deepin credit where it's due, they have made a lot of stuff themselves, and not just copied some stupid wallpaper and called it a brand "new and userfriendly alternative to windows". Kudos for it.

( I have tried it MB ;)

IMHO Deepin is the best distro to start-out with if you are a n00b coming from Mac. I tossed a couple Apple devotees (sporting goatees) down the bumpy road to neckbeard-dom by recommending Deepin as a dual-boot on their MacBook Retina thingamadoos. Proud to say that it sucked them into the GNU life B)

I haven't tried connecting to the servers since I was in Thailand, tho. Could be a pain in the tukhus back in the states.

Edit: 16 year old me wishing I was in Thailand. I was always trying to preserve anonymity on the interwebz at that time by faking age/location/et.al. I don't really care if people know who I am anymore :D

No problem there, they have a bunch of mirrors since their 2013 release. It is indeed a good starter DE, but nothing for us extremists :) And I agree, good development work there: Music Player, App Stores (2 of them), Movie Player, the whole DE frontend, the screenshot tool, the terminal - all comind from Deepin's in-house dev team.

One day before 14.10 comes out, here is Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS. Won't upgrade this.

I have a confession to make... I installed Ubuntu 14.04.2 on a partition :/ *cue gasps and a shriek from the back* I was actually wanting to play a wee bit with compiz and toy around with Unity some more. I positively disdained it last time I had a chance to work with it, but I wanted to get a feel for it before I really knock it :) Maybe it is just that I have Frank Pourcel playing in the background, but I feel more positive about it now. I would certainly feel comfortable deploying it by and large to a user base that has some feel for Linux but perhaps not confident enough to want to play around in the command line. Unity has a unique feel to it and can be customized to a great degree more than I would have expected. I was able to remove the Amazon/Youtube recommendations from the launchpad and make it actually search through my files and programs, which was nice. My main gripe is pulseaudio; I tried removing it but it was going to make life difficult for me so I decided to stick with it for the time being. I wouldn't necessarily count the memory usage (idling around 1030mb with Firefox, Rhythmbox, and hexchat) as a negative, as that is simply to be expected with a bloated desktop environment. All of the bloat quickly gets annoying and I have a hard time not trying to use my keybindings with everything, but for the most part I would feel comfortable handing Ubuntu over to a complete noob and expect them to be able to watch videos, manage files, browse facebook, etc.
