pc-bsd running the lumina desktop. ivan mentioned this one here.



Lumina is OK, but seems to me like a solution in search of a problem. I don't see what it does better than any of the existing DEs like LXDE, Xfce, or MATE. But I have not used it for long or done much research.

pc-bsd is easy to install (from a 4G iso!) -- it allows you to install several DEs and WMs (including spectrwm and ratpoison) right from the beginning. It also has an application installer and updater called "AppCafe" -- kind of like the Software Center. It did not like the older intel graphics in this machine, so I had to use a newer amd card I have. It's much more polished and designed for end-users than any other BSD I have tried.

Once again, however, I am reminded why I never stick with a BSD for long -- I am just to lazy to learn all the different ways to do things from the cli. But I will probably try some of the other BSDs on this machine just to try them.

That's cool to see.

In the case of spectrwm it is more obvious as it was originally developed on OpenBSD.

How about cwm? In there too as an option?

The installer lets you choose one or more from the following list:

Awesome, Cinnamon, FVWM, GNOME, i3, IceWM, KDE4, Lumina, LXDE, MATE, Openbox, ratpoison, spectrwm, WindowLab, Window Maker, and Xfce4.

Yes, you read that right, WindowLab.

Fluxbox is used as the window manager in Lumina, and if you don't select anything from the list you still get Fluxbox.

cwm can be installed using "pkg install cwm" but it's not in the options list.

Interesting stuff, Pidsley. PC-BSD has been sitting on my "have-to-try" list for ages, still haven't had the chance to try it (read: I'm lazy).
