NOX: Adipositas Beta 1 (586)

Unread post by machinebacon » Wed Jul 20, 2016 9:42 pm

Built on the Anorexia base, here's the full TTY desktop named Adipositas. It is still in beta, but it works perfectly fine. The final release (TBA) will additionally contain a few configuration files for TTY beginners. Those who feel comfy outside of X can safely download and install this Beta release.

This release comes with a load of productivity tools. For easy access, there's slmenu bound to the Alt-d key combination. Get the real retro feeling! Please also visit our reeducation camp at http://www.linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2407

What are the benefits:
- stay low on resources while keeping full productivity
- have more than a fallback mode if X breaks (again)
- work without distraction
- learn yourself some good Linux

What you can do:
- browse the internet using CLI tools
- visit BBS using our exclusive bbs program
- read stuff with gopher
- file management with several curses applications
- do everything and the kitchen sink in Emacs
- edit and convert documents
- watch movies, youtube videos
- browse images and PDFs
- get the latest news with RSS clients
- write and receive mails
- work with spreadsheets
- manage your time and contacts
- convert units
- listen to the radio or music locally
- test different shells (csh, mksh, zsh)
- learn how to do things the way they are meant to be done

Thanks for downloading.

This is strictly Beta, so if you find something abnormal (bugs, that is), feel free to report it here in this thread, I appreciate it.

Note to self:
- add "sudo bbqinstaller" to documentation and .slmenu (live session) ;)
- add "edit .slmenu" to slmenu
- ins gnuit
- ins dictionary

Tip of the day:
If you don't need the mouse (GPM), you can deactivate it in/with "rcconf". This is also valid for other services (be careful tho')

Fired it up, and installed on Lenovo B575 laptop. Looks sweet! No gitfm file manager though.

Thank you. Installed.
The thing was that I was looking for the installer with the menu as user and I didn't think that the menu, as root, was different and it had the installer entry.

^ yes, the menu for root is placed in /root/.slmenu, while the user's menu is in ~/.slmenu

Generally, we have been using "sudo bbqinstaller" since 2012, that's why I forgot to mention it this time (the first time ever!) in the release notes. Sorry for that, I should not assume that it is general knowledge.

So, after the login (username/password) I see the bbqapps menu. For example, I will choose the first one (shells) and go into that menu. I decide to go back to the main menu of bbqapps and I choose the last option in the shells list (back) and for some reason it logs me out. I have to log in again to get back to the bbqapps menu. Is this right?

*note: It only does the above when using the 'shell', 'edit' and 'bbqpkg' menu's.

I did have to edit the .bash_profile and replace 'bash' with 'bbqapps.' I rebooted and finally got the menu.

^ thanks, noted. There's only a "back") apps;; missing in the shell menu. It should do the same when going to bbqpkg and edit, because former spawns an application that exits 0, the latter edits the active file, yes.
(I recommend using alt-d, which is essential the command "xe", it's so much quicker than the dialog-based bbqapps)

You say "I rebooted and finally got the menu" -- maybe I misunderstand, but the default (wanted) behaviour is to bring the user into a shell (or X11), not into a dialog-based application. Of course a logout is needed if ~/.bash_profile is edited, but there's no need to reboot.

Sorry if I'm a bit slow in the brain, just got up.

^I get it now. You changed things up and went with slmenu instead of dialog-based application. I was making it look like the old Adipositas. Nevermind, I'm a dipshit. I like your way better.

^ nah, it's okay, it really had bbqapps after login in the last version, but after excessive use (I run Adipositas on my work PC in the office) I changed bbqapps to tmux in one TTY and emacs in the other for myself. I thought I shouldn't force any application upon the user, so it became a bash shell in the new version.
Of course you should set it up in a way that most fits your workflow. My recommendation is for example tmux (you will probably need a split screen every now and then) in one TTY, and maybe editing slmenu down to what is essential for you. Keep the reboot and poweroff and pm-suspend entries, it's nice to have them quickly accessible.

You can even make tmux autostart a set of applications in a certain layout.

The original files are all in /etc/skel/, so if something gets lost, you can copy it from there.
