VARIOUS: Lunchtime (586) Release Notes

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Nov 07, 2016 10:06 am

LinuxBBQ Lunchtime aims to introduce lightweight and minimalistic window managers to the intermediate user. This distribution release features 40 window managers that solely depend on X libraries, as well as dedicated dvtm, screen, tmux, Emacs and vim sessions inside xmonad. No GTK or QT applications have been added. LinuxBBQ Lunchtime is designed to be run live, but can be installed on a prepared partition.

FEATURES
Only window managers and applications that do not depend on GTK or QT are included from the Debian repositories. The two LISP-based window managers stumpwm and clfswm as well as Python-based tritium are missing due to temporarily unresolvable bugs in Debian Sid. Larswm, that has been dropped in sid, is included from Debian Jessie. Keybindings are handled via sxhkd, and lemonbar is included for customization by the user, if desired. The only GUI app for x-www-browser is Dillo. The Emacs25 no-X suite is installed and ready to use. Mplayer (no GUI) is the default movie player.

USAGE
The login manager 'bbqlogin' loops until you exit (choose "poweroff") from the menu. The keybindings (as set in ~/.config/sxhkd/sxhkdrc) work in all window manager sessions. Briefly, these are:
Alt + Return = spawn terminal
Alt + d = dmenu for terminal applications
Alt + o = OSD information
Alt + F2 = Run... dialog
Alt + F3 = dmenu
Alt + Shift + q = exit window manager
After login to the window manager, the corresponding man-page is opened automatically and can be closed by pressing 'q'.
When quitting a window manager, you can leave a score for later evaluation. The ratings file is stored in the user's home directory and named "~/ratings"

NETWORKING
The easiest way is by using 'ceni' as root. You can use sudo or su to get elevated permissions.

UPGRADES
LinuxBBQ tracks Debian's unstable branch. It is recommended to upgrade the system carefully and to regularly check the upgrade warnings at the LinuxBBQ forums: http://linuxbbq.org/bbs

STARTUP SEQUENCE
The ~/.bash_profile file starts 'bbqlogin' or 'bbqlogin-dialog' respectively.
The selected window manager's executable is sourced via '/usr/bin/start-wm'. To modify the autostarted applications, please edit this file as root.
Window manager-specific autostart programs can be added in the files named '/usr/local/bin/<wm>-start'.
The list of window managers is located in '/usr/local/share/wm-list'. It's not necessary to edit this file for most users.

NOTE
In the live session the user and root passwords are 'root'.

40 window managers? SShhheeee--iiit.
This mo-fo don't even get outta bed and turn on the computer for anything with less than 50 window managers.
Actually, that's not true. I enjoy a good WM as much as the next guy.
The only difference is, 15 mins after trying the last one, I have to apt-get purge them all.
Cuz, you know... I'm Anorexic.

Downloaded and ready to start accidentally dd'ing my hard drive all over again.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said,
but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Hoho, glad to see this! Thanks for all the work you guys put in this - it's always so nice to have something to play with. Sorry I haven't interacted much recently... I'm shocked at how much time being 18 consumes... college, a job, trying to dodge angry ex-girlfriends and all that good stuff.

Yeah, I would give my left nut to be 18 again. Enjoy it while you can!
