speedtest-cli

Unread post by Dr_Chroot » Mon Apr 13, 2015 9:48 pm

Does exactly what you think it will; tests internet bandwidth. A bit simpler than using wget or such to see what you are downloading at and easily shows your upload speeds. It was just brought to my attention Ivan already linked it here, but if you want to grab it from the command line:

It works with Python 2.4-3.4 and I had no dependencies needed. Just a

Code: Select all

wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest_cli.py
chmod +x speedtest-cli
did the trick quite nicely :)

^ Well, that's slightly horrifying but also slightly expected considering your location :/

gutterslob is lucky to be where he is, considering he can get a 1Gpbs Download speed for $50 a month 0_o http://myrepublic.com.sg/pricing/

@doccy, the fact is that I could have an upgrade up to 20 or 50M, not even that horribly expensive, but 50M not available in this building yet (!), and - that"s the worst thing - it would come in combination with a set top box for the TV (that I don't own). Honestly, for reading some news and articles the 4M is speedy enough (I don't really do anything else on the internet that needs high download speed - they offer 8M and 20M which would cost so much more that I don't see the point), and if I need to upload an ISO, I do it via FTP, go out and have something to eat, and when I am back it's finished uploading :)

I know that I will start crying when I see the rip-off stats that my ISP provides...

^ Indeed! 17Mb upload is fantastic, kiiroitori: you don't even need a seedbox! Just toss on a VPN and you can help save humanity by seeding some torrents ;)

8.5 down, 0.60 up, so same as Ivan's. Still, I can't watch an 1080p stream without it constantly stopping to buffer - glorious Serbian interntetz.
