Messenger for desktop

Unread post by opt1k » Tue Jul 07, 2015 6:46 am

Good idea, bad implementation...
300MB memory heap for a messenger..uses "a" web browser...to implement itself.
It appears to come with an implementation of the chrome browser.

Apparently it also creates an open TCP socket for this? Even though its on the local loopback interface, it seems un-necessary.

The .desktop file is also a poor implementation, it needs editing to be recognized by lxpanel....
If you like your facebook messenger to use 300mb of memory this is a great idea (:

Its on github, and here http://messengerfordesktop.com/

So its official. I do not advise the messenger to anyone. It got to 640mb of ram. Once I closed it the I have no idea what happend, disk IO went off the charts, and the system became unusable, a restart was required.

Yes it was facebook messenger. What do you use for hangouts? Does pidgin support that yet?

^ Google hasn't released an API for it (after they moved from XMPP), so nothing other than official clients are available, for now, and I'd guess for a long time, if not forever.
I use my phone, though.

for chat only isn't still just gtalk, which you can configure in CenterIM or pidgin or whatever. For video, I guess the Chome Hangouts App, if not through the Chrome browser itself. But like tenkainen said, mostly G+ stuff and hangouts is off my phone.

Work hard; Complain less

^^ yeah fuckers, it's just personal stuff now with hangouts.
just the default chrome app for client. used to be a total shitter with a tiler, that's at least better now.

all jabber at work.

^ To sort of test - I just jabbered myself from work to my gmail address in pidgin, didn't work.

There is a hangouts extension for firefox as well. IT seems easier to just log in to gmail or use a phone.

dkeg: are you suggesting that it is possible to still do google instant messanging through pidgin? I might install this later. I also use hangouts for google voice sms, It might be nice to use pidgin for that.

^ I would be interested also. Don't think gtalk works over pidgin any more.

^ Hm, I thought it worked. Last time I checked it was working but I stopped using IM clients altogether.

We don't have a group jabber server, I don't have a personal one either.
So wouldn't know what to run.
IRC serves for communications - we don't often chat out of the BBQ.

For facebook messenger, there is messenger.com, an official web interface. Considering the resource requirements of that 3rd-party messenger hack, a browser could be even learner. I don't use facebook though so what do I know.

Ironically, Google Hangouts's video chat does only work flawlessly in Firefox (Google Talk plugins) and not in Chromium, no video with the latter.
