Most paintprograms need GTK or QT, this one is an oldie but light on resources and free from those things.
Ofcourse it isn't Gimp, but for basic things it's perfect.
Oh 'sudo apt-get install' should do the rest, it's in the repo's

Does it do a good job with jpg's and PNG? I have been looking for something to use on my pics, but kinda shy away from gimp. Too techie, so I really can't get a working grip on it, lols

I'm not an artist but you can use those formats with Xpaint. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles like Gimp, but for basic drawing I *think* this could be useful.

nomnom, depends on what you want to do. If you want to do things like resizing, desaturating, adding a tint, apply certain filters, converting from png to jpg, there is imagemagick. If you want to use a brush, pencil, scissors and layers, forget imagemagick :D

imagemagick takes a bit to figure out, and is (imo) complex enough to keep you busy for a while. it's a very good tool and you can do great things with it. just search for "Paletter" script and see how i used it there.

xpaint is cool, nice program, just compare it to Windows Paint. this one is even better than that.

I like imagemagick too :)
And i think that Rhowaldt gives a perfect description, a bit like ms-paint.. but better :)
