cool stuff both GS and Gekko.

now, since i've felt like shit for some undefinable reason for the second part of the day, i suppose it is a good time to clear up my head a bit with some complex insanity. here's your Venetian Snares post.

for those who haven't heard much of the dude besides me talking about how awesome he is all the time, a little more info first. Venetian Snares is (one of) the alias(es) of Aaron Funk from Winnipeg, Canada. Yes, his last name is Funk. Yes, his first name is Aaron. He has released an absolute shitload of records, and he himself says he just spends his days making music and not doing much else.

one thing beforehand: some of this music is really loud and really fast and really complex and many people i've played this shit to have told me they are completely unable to listen to it even for a couple of seconds. however, i would urge you to break through such a response. i have found that obnoxiously hard and insane some of his shit is, it is too loud to do anything else with but stop thinking and listen and experience it. hell, i listen to this shit with a fat spliff and my eyes closed. please consider that.

one of his first releases was "Making Orange Things", a collaboration with Speedranch, who is (i believe) a noisecore or something artist. Apparently Speedranch sent recordings of him screaming into a microphone to Vsnares, who then made songs with it. Needless to say, this is some of his harshest shit.

Unborn Baby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qerJpuEin2c

He did a collaboration EP with Stunt Rock, but more notably he did one with his then GF, Hecate, who is herself a notable figure in the breakcore scene. They recorded themselves having sex and made an album called Nymphomatriarch which is pretty dark (as expected).

Blood on the Rope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAtLMW7bK0Y

As for how he feels about his place of birth, here's "Winnipeg is a frozen shithole" from the album of the same title: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrD-OYuEkyY

Now, i am fully aware that to many this might all sound like a whole bunch of horrid noise, and doesn't evoke much of the wonder and brilliance i attribute to the guy. however, this is an overview and these are his early days, when he was basically a very angry yet talented dude. it is clear however that he likes to experiment and do unexpected things. at one point he released a one-track EP called "A giant alien force more sick and violent & sick than anything you can imagine". it is both a pretty apt description of a lot of his music, but also shows that he is not just one for mashing out noise-tracks and that's that. it is also notably chilled out compared to some of the earlier links (at least in the beginning :) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfjgq_q_als

to give us nerds a chuckle and to maybe get some more insight into the kind of person he is, here's his album called

Code: Select all

printf("shiver in eternal darkness/n");
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdv1MCn_7i4

a different moniker of his is "Last Step", which he uses for his all-analog tracks. no software synths or whatever, just analog machines. needless to say, this has a big impact on his sound, and the tracks are often more weird than noisy. he made three albums under this name, 1961, Bhavani and Sleep, the last of which is interesting because he made the music while sleep-deprived, and managed to capture the feeling pretty well. Here's Microsleeps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO_sZO1H4Gg

another analog adventure he did was a surprising collaboration with none other than the Chili Peppers' John Frusciante. they called themselves "Speed Dealer Moms", and they simply came together, brought some machines, and made some shit. here's one of the two tracks that was the result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYE6AonZGHk

during his musical wanderings he experimented with a lot of different shit, but always mashed up in such a way that you can always hear it is from his hands. some examples...

- ragga/jungle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuvEoNef-Eg
- A rework of Motley Crue's "Too Young to Fall in Love": www.youtube.com/watch?v=-thYLjDag8o
- A track made completely from sounds out of Herbie films, nicely titled "Herbie Goes Ballistic": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NajDi5x2Bmk
- A bunch of wicked songs about his many cats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF4C5apqZ9U
- this fucking weird shit i don't even know wtf it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZX343wMZl0
- a dub-techno-ish EP with two tracks about Black Sabbath, here's the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bshN1JHymMk
- the album "Higgings Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits" which seems to be a commentary on jungle, with the fantastically mashed up "Dance Like You're Selling Nails": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjQJeMF7HM8 + the always delightful response to all the big MC shoutouts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... FKyU#t=618
- "Canadian Reggae": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig12oorsWCo
- an album based all on Eurocore-type-stuff, and which is fucking awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZhWskFjgNI
- the Moonglow EP which is some breakcore-exotica-jazz-type-stuff for Gekko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meMWBky15jw + https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QP2I5AHC4I
- something he calles "Cubist Reggae", which seems like a good name indeed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NHuO6JNZzc
...and a bunch more.

one of my favourite albums is "Winter in the belly of a snake", which features him singing for (i think) the first time, on quite an emotional track about his dad, aptly named "Dad": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpIS2UZNB40
from the same album, not much of a story but just a fantastic track, "January": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyZDVtkrjIk

this is kind of the start of his more "emotional" shit (even though he did a full acid-influenced album dedicated to sperm and such - "Filth" - in between as well), which turned out to be so fucking awesome i nearly died. or something. anyway, we now come to probably his most-loved and most-accessible album, "Rossz Csillag Alatt Születtet", which is Hungarian for "Born under a bad star". it was inspired by an earlier journey of his to Hungaria. it is amazing and if you give a damn you should definitely listen to this in full. here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H28YlOrnTaA + some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rossz_Csil ... 3%BCletett

worth mentioning also is that Bong-Ra (who happens to be Dutch) did a remix EP of that album. here's one track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_CjNMlGLu8

after this he did another album of classically-inspired shit called "My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)", which suddenly has this damn track that i just dont understand at all and which took me completely offguard on an album full of classical adaptations and well, sounds nothing like his music yet he still made it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB5V6sblUDA

his latest release is called "My Love is a Bulldozer", and again he sings in his beautiful (ahem) voice, and it is awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUXRilk-JNA

well, now i'm sick of writing about this shit even though i could continue for another mile. but you guys have enough shit to listen to now and all the complexity has scraped my mind clean again, so let's just stop talking and enjoy the awesomeness that is Venetian Snares.

P.S. if you ever get a chance to see this guy play live: do it. it is sure to blow your mind.

Yeah, me and Aaron go waay back. My mates supported him back just post millenia, First heard 'selling nails' there I think I posted that.
If i'd have known how much you were into him I'd have got him to autograph something.
I'm glad you posted all that as links, my machine doesn't do too well with more than a few embeds.

I do like his work.

There's a huge lack of IDM in here...which is my 'get stuff done while listening to music' on the normal. I love the organic sounds that Boards of Canada (who hail from Scotland) manage to add to what is a traditionally glitchy music style.

@wux: i'm not much of an autograph-guy. would like to meet the dude some time, but i'm quite content with him doing live shows and making new albums :)

as for the embeds: ja, my browsers stumbles on them as well, which is why i switched to links instead.

Wow, what a post Rho.

You are right guys, about the links, my machine also cannot handle the embedded stuff anymore. I will port links, too.

Looks like I have a lot of posts to catch up on, especially those from Gekko (including interview) and Rho. Will check em all out and comment in due time. For now;

Album;
http://yosihorikawa.bandcamp.com/album/vapor
Mish-mash of samples, hip-hop beats with electro basslines and IDM chords. Atmospheric, uplifting stuff.

Mixes;
http://www.stampthewax.com/2014/10/15/m ... ri-pepper/
Slow (~120bpm) jazzy, soulful house

http://www.junodownload.com/plus/2014/1 ... d-records/
Quirky and leftfield. Some tracks would even be at home in Gekko's Exotica thread.

https://soundcloud.com/trushmix
Archive for TrushMix, a Norwegian website/blog. All sorts of stuff, from IDM to cosmic-disco to chillout/downtempo to weird shit.

Strange post-rock/ambient/glitchish requiem by Kashiwa Daisuke. Has a delightful theme to it - quite nice with an energy drink and a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook :D

This one is really my kind of music, thanks again gutterslob. Exotica, sure, but also library music (which I love).

^^ I did enjoy some of Venetian Snare's stuff (snuff?) when you posted it :D ("Unborn Baby," "Nymphomatriarch," et.al. were a wee bit too dark, IMHO.)

All that withstanding, "Dad" and "January" were superb and My Downfall (Original Soundtrack) was a fantastic little album :D This man is either insane or genius. I cannot tell which...

^ he's both :)
understand that the older stuff is a bit too dark for most. the stuff you mention as enjoyable is newer, and really "Winter in the belly of a snake" marks a sort of "turning point" in his career i think, so it makes sense to listen to most shit from that point on.

@gekko: seeing the musical genres you are coming from, i'm not surprised that shit makes you struggle. in fact, it makes most people i know struggle.
no shame in it, just be happy knowing perhaps your mind isnt fucked up enough to enjoy songs about dead babies and sick fantasies :)

putting that shit out there for educational and fun purposes. do with it what you like!
