Two often overlooked records of Miles Davis:

Dark Magus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK_fvDf ... iUdzN6tC7K
In Concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpbG20H ... azkDOshXk3

Straight from his eclectic-electric period.

John Coltrane, my favorite is Afro Blue Impressions, the 2-CD release

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvT0YI3 ... PUn_ATUXnY

Cab Calloway, i found the first volume, of the two part (four discs each), Cab Calloway the Early Years, at a little record store in a basement. the owner was this great old guy who was happy to order the second volume for me (it was 20 years ago, and i didn't know shit about ordering from the internet). one of the best purchases i've ever made.

Jelly Roll Morton, if you want to catch him at his best, listen to the Library of Congress recordings he made at the end of his career. it's 9 hours or so, and much of it is him talking about the origins of jazz. read the book of transcripts, if you can find it.

Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli - i love gypsy jazz. Django is one of the greatest guitarists ever to pick up the instrument, and he did it with one finger less than most of the rest. i can also credit these guys for introducing me to David Grisman (he and Grappelli did an excellent live album together).

Porgy and Bess https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01GW0jd ... 7A2DE13933

It took me a while to "get" into this Miles Davis. I still prefer him when is more raw and wild, but I tried this one with low lights, a beer and nothing else. Another masterpiece.
So is there anything I can criticize about Porgy And Bess? Well, I can say this: I once loaned it to a friend who offered a bit of criticism. While I do not remember his exact words, his critique went something along these lines: “I put on Porgy And Bess, tried to do some housework, noticed that the album was too intense for me to do anything else but listen to it, so I turned it off and finished my housework.” That being said, I offer a warning. Porgy And Bess is not for your parties, social gatherings, dates or any other occasion where it might be background music. In fact, I have difficulty even listening to it when other people are in the room. That may be the reason I am so drawn to this album. This music demands attention. By exploring the musical possibilities of the opera, Evans and Davis provide the listener with a daring and evocative expose on the human experience. I can think of no better purpose for an album.
