Funk

Unread post by rhowaldt » Tue Oct 07, 2014 4:54 pm

i am not very well educated in this department, but still have some nice tracks to share, so here it goes.
(for page-loading times i will post links instead of embed videos)

Billy Preston - Outa Space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cLBMJYduWg
Bar-Kays - Too hot to stop (from the movie Superbad, which has a wonderful funky soundtrack): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Myrq0vmiY
Curtis Mayfield - If there's a hell below, we're all gonna go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1xmXOP3lhM
Lyle Workman ft Bootsy Collins - Superwhat (again, Superbad OST): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUUSdyYpwT8

let's hear some more!

Oh, I really like true funk music. I got a pretty good CD, not too long ago, Let's see...

Here it is: Dumpstafunk - Dirty Wood. The band includes two progeny of the Neville family of New Orleans. Good stuff.

You might recognise the sample at the intro, beat and vox.
You may also see it's a playlist, just listen to the lot, some more samples yet to come out of there.

Please tell me you know about this LP. Jazz-funk-fusion -

^ thanks! that Funk Playlist is wonderful, saved for enjoying with my girl later :)

i never really got into Herbie Hancock much when i first encountered him some years ago. this sounds good though, and i do know the cover and the track "Watermelon Man", but that's it. a shame :)

I got four or five of those albums at my local vinyl shack, for 5 quid each.

I was looking for some early P-funk, refound this beauty.
Funk or not, don't care, I'm sitting crying listening to this:

Getting into soul here, I can't really tell the difference, apart from MoTown.

^^ genre-blending is bound to happen. we could make the thread into "funk & soul" instead, but i dont know if that makes more or less sense than what we have now...

Some references: Funk - Sly & The Family Stone, Herbie Hancock. Soul - Sam and Dave, Aretha Franklin. Not all that similar, IMHO, but that is the music I grew up with.

I... I really have no clue how to tag this. Perhaps a jazz-funk mix? Pleasant enough sound, though.

Edit: I should mention that this is a Turkish piece and dropped it here because there was no "Turkey" section...

Dunno if it's funk, but I finally found this sample, from an amazing song:
Little Richard - The Rill Thing (1970)
http://youtu.be/Kj2PNrDn-MA
(check out the "retriggering" the beat in the middle and changes of tempo early on)
