Fantastic idea! Foreign songs like "Stairvey to Cheaven" and other international tunes have tended to occupy many Israeli mp3 players. Nevertheless, where there is great culture, there is great music. How a country could be founded by some boatloads of refugees in the 20th Century, revive a "dead" language, and create a unique identity is beyond me. While I disagree with many of their polical actions, I still have great respect for the country as a whole. Would love to bribe a rabbi to sign my birthright papers so I could go on a tour. Or go work on a kibbutz for the winter :D

(I have horrible tastes in music, but I just might have some songs in my library that may fit...)

I remember my great-grandmother loving Fried's music, and for some reason it was engrained deep within my psyche. It brings back warm fuzzy feels, even though I haven't the slightest clue of what he is saying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W3w4JyxakY

Mordechai Ben David, an anivesdik enough fellow who has perplexed me over the years. Every once in a while I start thinking that he is Haredi then he he says something that makes me think his is Orthodox. Nonetheless, he is a person that would fit in well in Mea She'arim. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j66u9veCDOc

Apparently, Black Hebrews encamped in Dimona produced some funk, disco, soul, et.al in the 70s. Just found this with a quick startpage search ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeEc2u6DDaM

We can't let Kaveret slip through the cracks, though. Considered one of the most important bands in Israeli history, they were the first to represent the Holy Land at the Eurovision Song Contest and bring their country's music international. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGkOnhy_Bd0

Israeli avant-garde/Post-Rock band Lebanon was, IMHO, the best group to come out of that strip of seacoast in the Near-East. I'll let the music speak for itself :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgHE83PTRLk

Listening to Last.FM and was introduced to a fantastic little klezmer troupe... I had a hard time trying to keep a straight face listening to a band with such a conspicuous name. ( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)

^ Thanks, ivan 8) Speaking of klezmer, I didn't know whether to put this klezmer avante-garde jazz here or over in the Jazz thread. Since it is the season of Hanukkah, I might as well toss it in here.
