The Netherlands

Unread post by rhowaldt » Sun Dec 28, 2014 12:44 am

this thread is dedicated to Dutch music. Belgians may count themselves in, or may start their own thread, i dont give a fuck.

there are a few "Dutch Prides" (aside from the Gay Pride, haha!), and im not sure i will remember them all. however, here's some good shit.

The Golden Earring - When The Lady Smiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYxp6OIEZlk - very amusing video as well :)
The Golden Earring - Radar Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf53Pg2AkdY (nice oldskool video :)

Herman Brood was another dude who was a musician and painter, fulltime speed junkie and threw himself off the Amsterdam Hilton at some point in his life, after which he died - suicide, so to speak. anyway, his music was great. some examples.

Herman Brood - Saturday Night (Live): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mEjmWnihrc
Herman Brood - Heatwave (cover): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kocy8zu0gmE
Herman Brood - Never be clever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vdmNmKnSn4 (probably the soundtrack to his way of life)
Herman Brood - My Way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu2FtVSQK-0 (still love this version of that song, also because of the fat Dutch accent on those lyrics - wonderful video as well to get a bit of an overview of the man)

Some other shit, Dutch language this time.

Doe Maar - Nederwiet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI_jjJoUMuM (special slighty-sloweddown-extra-bass version, which actually made me take the time to post my first YouTube comment ever. insanely good. needless to say, this track is about weed, and gives you tips and instructions on how to grow proper Dutch weed)
Stuurbaard Bakkebaard - Lied van de Meeuwen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGHVCxCeSbE (Stuurbaard Bakkebaard means "Starboard Sideburn". Lied van de Meeuwen means "Song of the Seagulls". language is of no importance, this song just grooves on)
De Kift - De Rivier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIZ7x8mOaBE (these guys do a sort of theatre/band mishmash crossover. their concerts are both a musical performance and a piece of theatre. this song is "The River" and i dont know it but it sounds fucking awesome anyway)
Spinvis - Smalfilm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9toCufcJAAI (this dude makes all the music on his home PC, on his own. then he goes out to play it live and is with half na orchestra. its pretty cool, he's pretty good. even managed to get in trouble over the lyric in this track, where he sings "A while back i drove over a cyclicst, but thank god nobody saw me", as well as "Today I cut a mouse in two and then sewed it back together". wonderful! "everything's a riddle and i dont know yet in which shape or which language")
Bert Heerink - Julie July: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFcy4_MvP0w (once used in a advert for Grolsch beer i believe, but a supernice funky and smooth track. good voice too!)

For those who care about that shit, I always liked this gothic band called After Forever, which sounds a bit like Nightwish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H_FNur8KD0 (just know this album)

Some hiphop. De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, "The Youth of Today", did some fantastic shit.
De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig - Watskeburt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjER3EX948w (their first break-through single, half of these lyrics cannot even be comprehend by your average Dutchman because it is deep Amsterdam slang. wonderful beat though, and insane lyrics)
De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig - Shenkie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOqLHmJmbc4 (video was the winner of a contest for making uhhhh a video for this track. some 13yo kid being strange and cool at the same time. Dig.)
De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig - Sterrenstof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNMXSKfWfLQ (just absolute wonderful groove)

Mr Polska, a Polish dude making Dutch hiphop, for some reason. pretty obnoxious shit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW03y7VTgYM (love it)

there's more but i am too sleepy right now. goodnight :)

My favorite Dutch group was Golden Earring. I was discussing them with rust_collector, last night, and I discovered that Kiss and Aerosmith used to be opening acts for them.

I really enjoy The Gathering. Especially when Anneke is singing.
For those not interested in the heavier stuff, here is something smoother from them: http://youtu.be/JLUJWNL30iU.
The whole Sleepy Buildings is really worth a listen.

At least two need to be in the list:

Shocking Blue (yeah I mention them weekly)
Blue Diamonds (don't laugh :) they were revolutionary!)

And of course the great George Baker.

how about Venga Boys? ;)

oh yeah, that reminds me. i was in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and some of my friends met some dude they were going to buy weed off for some strange reason (damn, if you wanna smoke weed, dont go out of NL. but okay). anyway, that dude asked where they were from, they said Holland, and he said "I know a Dutch song!" and proceeded to sing "Meisje van de Oliebollenkraam" by Zanger Rinus. this guy looks and acts as if he is completely retarted, and perhaps he is. this is, apparently, a part of Dutch musical culture that got exported to fucking Slovenia. proud moments :/

anyway, here he is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R0FyucySDQ
and if that didnt convince you, here he is again with another hit single: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHEFbX81XWQ

P.S. no, these are not actually hits, just curiosities that pretty much everybody finds so awful it becomes funny :)

"I hope you can appreciate just how sophisticated European cultures are after listening to that timeless composition by a true Dutch master. He is talking, of course, about the postmodern deconstruction of macro economics, gender dynamics in the 21st century and the dangers of unchecked globalism." I think.
