Progressive music

“It is music that does progress. It takes an idea and developes it, rather than just repeat it. Pop songs are about repetition and riffs and simplicity. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential."
No pop or guitar-rock/metal stuff here :) I guess most stuff will be heavily instrumental, synth-based and songs are longer than 10 minutes, or segue into each other :)
So, maybe something like Solaris with their Martian Chronicles, made in Hungary in the 1980s.

Oh, where to start?
Since I mentioned this in another thread, try Curved Air's
Air Cut (in headphones please).
Particularly "Metamorphosis":

If the vocals coming back in at the end of the piano solo don't give you chills, you aren't listening.
And Eddie Jobson's violin on "Armin" (play this as loud as you can stand it):

Gekko, I will have more to say about Camel later. Great band.

Damn, can't find Islands nor Red from King Crimson on youtube. Well, I love them just as much as I love their first record. :)

^ There are no bad King Crimson albums. :) I used to have all of the early albums and most of the later ones on vinyl.
I was going to mention Red eventually. Must be played loud.

Doesn't get much more prog than Van Der Graaf Generator.
How can you argue when a dude is playing two saxophones at the same time:

Can we include
R.I.O. bands here?
Henry Cow - Legend
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBHBF4di8Sk
Art Bears - In Two Minds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkvB92a7X2I
Fred Frith - Gravity

Stormy Six - L'orchestra dei fischietti (Italy when it was real good) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pIXB0iTCZE
Then I should talk about Lars Hollmer, but since the man did so many good things (and not only prog-rock related), I'll keep it for another time.
@pidsley: I got Red on cd (along with In The Court and Islands), played loud so many times. ;)

Since Gekko mentioned
Camel, let's go there.
First Light from Rain Dances (featuring Mel Collins on sax again) :

Probably my favorite Camel album: Moonmadness, from 1976.

Listen to all of it if you can -- like many progressive albums, it is a complete work, written to be listened to in its entirety.

Ok one last for the prog for a while. More modern sounds this time. Mars Volta with their second album "Frances The Mute". Original and very fresh approach to their music, and yes I am a softie for falsetto vocals.
