Big Band / Swing
Big Band / Swing
We don't have a thread for these, do we? I'm talking about Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw among others.
Gene Krupa was a maniac.
Here he is with Benny Goodman, Harry James on Trumpet, Lionel Hampton on vibes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTzP7ecGQiw
If you like Krupa, you need the Box Set.

Re: Big Band / Swing
all we have is the Jazz-thread, and that is as insanely broad as making a Rock-thread would be, so i applaud this subcategory, not in the least because of awesome fucking music.
agreed, Gene Krupa is supercool. The video doesnt have the title with it, but if im not mistaken that is Sing, Sing, Sing, a famous Benny Goodman tune, and awesome indeed with insane drumming. wonderful video pids, thanks, very cool to have all those other great players on there as well. have you ever seen the drum battle with Buddy Rich? > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ5B7yqDYbA
i fucking love Glenn Miller. this is one of my favourite songs, both musically and lyrically - The Little Man Who Wasn't There: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJQvqjxwWQw
minimalist swing by the Mills Brothers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li1dtJ6jC4w
and then we get the Swing revival, which did produce some cool stuff. i still love the Zoot Suit Riot album by Cherry Poppin Daddies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IqH3uliwJY
other famous ones are Big Bad Voodoo Daddys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgmghzzk9Q4 (where did all that "Daddy" suddenly come from?)
and of course Brian Setzer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHWcN5YxuYc
best message in music ever (by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FvsgGp8rSE

^ Thanks roald. Yes, that is Sing, Sing, Sing.
Re: Big Band / Swing
This is a side of jazz I still have to properly explore. Only names I know have been already mentioned.
Re: Big Band / Swing
Benny Goodman deserves his reputation, but I like Artie Shaw just a bit better.

Re: Big Band / Swing
@pids: awesome, and "In the mood", even though it is almost as overused as "Take Five" in jazz examples, is a fantastic tune.
an attempt for something perhaps a little lesser known for gekko: Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Afe4IBbnYY (contemporary, but sounds proper old :)

Re: Big Band / Swing
^ that's cool, thanks, didnt know that. pretty different in style from "regular" bigband/swing, but i suppose it still counts, as it is definitely a bigband, and it definitely swings :)

^ this song i didnt know and sounds a lot better than her singles, which tend to sound quite similar and often have a housebeat under them. dunno, might also be that i just heard it played on Dutch radio too often :)

You know what they say, Heinrich Heine is more popular in France than in Germany. :)

Re: Big Band / Swing
One of the most interesting band from the Swing revival of the late '90s is Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
As if often happens to me, I discovered them thanks to a film: Swingers. They also appear in Ally McBeal, IIRC.
The best record to get to know the feelings they can swing around is Americana Deluxe.
Some songs:
Mr Pinstripe Suit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBxfAs_ ... 5C&index=2
King of Swing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xphZkAi ... A3E0640C5C
You Me And the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fmo_AT ... 5C&index=5

Again, from the late 90s Swing revival: Squirrel Nut Zippers
Aside from the cool band name, they have at least one record you should put your ears on right now: Hot.
Some songs:
Got My Own Thing Now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qcpc1aR ... cD&index=1
Put a Lid On It https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdAt4qW ... wxoAdzJzcD

nice, got a friend who's a Lindy hop dancer. weird he was the only person who never danced at parties, now it's for a living. He even dresses like he's from the 40's/50's
