new wave

Unread post by pidsley » Mon Jan 12, 2015 11:10 pm

1970s and 80s post punk. (edit) NOT A RULE !

We will leave Blondie, Velvet Underground and Ramones for now, and just go gently to Talking Heads.

Oh but where to start. Let's just start with the easy stuff.

I do not obey the 1970-80's rule. Saw these guys a few years ago, in a hole in the wall metal club of all things, and seriously playing to a group of about 20 totally confused people and like 5 people who knew what they sounded like. I'd say that they keep that whole 'new wave' vibe alive pretty well.

Plus, they totally won me over by wearing their shiny clothes and makeup and rocking out when it was pretty obvious that their booking guy didn't do their research. Had a good time.

And I do not obey that "New Wave" means "Neue Deutsche Welle" (more here: http://www.wonderingsound.com/spotlight ... -invasion/) in Germany :) Yes, call me a Hungarian-Jewish Nazi, I don't care :D

I never said new wave was "only" 70-80s -- I was using that to give people an idea of what I was talking about. I don't give a crap what you call any of it. I was only trying to have fun, post some shit other people might enjoy, and encourage others to do the same. I'd really rather just listen to the music. I think I'll go do that.

No offense meant. I normally associate New Wave with the same time frame as well, and especially the introduction of the music video. I meant the 'rule' statement to be taken as humor, based on the fact that I had just posted in the 'punk' thread...which probably makes no sense to anyone but me considering that it's a complex joke that isn't explicitly stated in this context. I forget sometimes that I'm not funny.

I'll refrain for commenting further beyond adding this is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions new wave:

The first, and best, Devo album, Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! from 1978.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gla1DBHes4

I bought a vinyl copy of this in 1978. The record was not black, but more like swirly purple multi-colored vinyl. Very strange, like the music.

Brian Eno produced this album.

Probably my favorite Talking Heads album, Remain in Light from 1980.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilcD1fH ... 09DEAC6BAC

Brian Eno produced and played several instruments on this album. Adrien Belew (also in King Crimson) played guitar.

I don't know where this belongs, but I think it almost fits here. Godley and Creme from 1978.
