Re: punk
does punkrock count? never really sure where the boundaries are. anyway, here is Propagandhi, who did super liberal LGBT-rights/animal-rights/vegan/society-fucking-sucks shit. i always liked it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylIHTl7lIVM

Hey bones! Thanks for the post, but could you post links (instead of embedding) for those of us Flash deprived? Lots of youtube plays without Flash now.
roald, yeah, that's punk! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propagandhi
punk makes you want to go out and break windows.

Re: punk
Since we're ignoring silly glam punk and going straight to music made by angry people.
Minor Threat is a personal favorite, primarily because they were VERY working class. Whereas much of punk rock up to the time was about wearing studded leather and doing drugs "like a rockstar", they represented a large group of people who couldn't relate to that either.

The Minutemen, I Felt Like a Gringo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiNAwf7BSPE
And I can't start on 1980's Hardcore in the states without mentioning the Bad Brains. While they got chilled out later on, I'll give them major props for being black Rastafarians in what probably wasn't the most welcoming environment.

...depending, I may continue this subject later. Many people grew out of being punk, I'm not so sure I have.

SS Decontrol, more straightedge hard punk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4F_dtFstrA
Necros, "Reject"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikdrdVsU_Js
...to lighten the mood before I start decade hopping, Meatmen-"Tooling for Anus"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB8a1wBHlyw
Getting to the 90's-ish. Slapshot, "Hang Up Your Boots". Also brilliant writers of "Punk's dead, you're next":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPF8TyNnJJE
...and following more hardcore as we approach modern day. Agnostic Front, "For my Family":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebBjGp7QOGc
While "Punk" eventually became some kind of branch of pop, a lot of what I'd call American hardcore just sort-of evolved into a bunch of branches. What gets officially labeled as hardcore actually has less of that "I don't care about you" feeling that some hipster somewhere would probably call metalcore or deathcore, but I hate people that insist that there are little genres within genres of music. I can see differentiating, but people who argue about what labels best fit a band should seriously spend some time thinking about their lives.

Re: punk
Totally random list here, I try to make it chronological and German only :)
Rotzkotz - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjqYuyBFv98 this must be early 1980
Hans-a-plast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh8zTAghkKU probably 1981
Beton Combo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKplwq1zplE apparently 1983, but that's how Punk should sound IMO :)
Toxoplasma - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df6rzUQ39KU from 1984 - for pidsley, it's about bombs and Hiroshima :D
Aurora (Hungary, one of the first 'successful' bands there) versus WIZO (Germany) united: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MsF3YnAPLc
Stupid question: can Oi! go here, too?

Re: punk
Not a bad idea XD Pleasantly enough, it is opening a whole new world for me, musically. I haven't been exposed to such a variety of genres and cultural forms, so that is nice.ivanovnegro wrote:We should rename the forums to MusicBBQ. :P
Anyhow, here: have some MxPx.
They recently released an acoustic album, which was quite unique.
I am caught among choosing Life in General, Teenage Politics or Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo as their best album; each have their own virtues and vices, I guess. rateyourmusic.com is no help here, unfortunately, as the reviews and critiques tend to conflict one another. It seems like each has his own taste in punk :)
Life in General album has some of my favorite selections, including "Middlename", "Do Your Feet Hurt", "Sometimes You Have to Ask Yourself", etc. etc. IMHO most of their more recent albums contain more forgettable selections (is punk a dying breed?) but for the most part their earlier albums are fantastic! Who doesn't like lyrics such as "Never quite just knew how to get it through/The utilitarian sloganeerian minds/And its time to stand up and redefine the lines/right now"? :D

Re: punk
^ XD I haven't heard of Screeching Weasel, before. I like them :)
Found some great punk from the late USSR (primarily Гражданская Оборона, although there were some other great groups there)... I actually kind of like it, even though I haven't the slightest clue what they are saying.
