Folkiness
Folkiness
while listening i suddenly realized we dont have a thread for Folk-type music yet. i might be using genre definitions wrong, but i see folk as being anything with acoustic guitar and singing (although you can surely have shit like electro-folk and what, some of which is awesome as well). anyway, instead of trying to define it i will just assume you all get the gist.
to start off, i think i just discovered a new artist that i love. apparently she was once part of Damien Rice's band.
Lisa Hannigan - Little Bird: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRdj8MRj9Js
Lisa Hannigan - Passenger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve2Qj281G0s (filmed in The Netherlands, mostly in Utrecht. the venue they are playing in the video is Tivoli in Utrecht, which I've been to a bunch of times to see Calexico, Iron and Wine and Grandaddy. might post some of that further up :)
If you like that, there's a good chance you will also enjoy Feist.
Feist - Graveyard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbnHmFKxPgA
Feist - Mushaboom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYF0qU5WSew
(all her shit is awesome)
Iron and Wine did some cool shit. dude also has an epic beard, which is worth something. his voice is smooth as a black baby's bottom.
Iron and Wine - Cinder and Smoke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSarZ7g1F-g
Iron and Wine - Woman King EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmMPmQoan3g (awesome in its entirety)
Iron and Wine - Bird Stealing Bread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xei0hbSy60
then somewhere along the album The Shepherd's Dog they started incorporating some African percussion stuff and i didnt like it, so i stuck to the first 3 albums or so.
Arizona Amp and Alternator - Man on a String: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9rfx2PM9s (Howe Geld, aka Giant Sand)
Cocorosie are apparently in the "Freak Folk" category. who cares? anyway, they make a lot of their shit with the help of sound-making toys and such. the shit i like (first 2 albums i think) basically sounds like it has been recorded in somebody's livingroom and/or kitchen.
Cocorosie - Armageddon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXYTrU5CEz4
Cocorosie - By Your Side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6bInhOhUYs

Joanna Newsom was once a member of Belle and Sebastian. her solo shit is quite interesting, and often lovely as fuck. she plays the harp, and many people hate her voice. her voice makes me cry, because i find it insanely beautiful.
Joanna Newsom - On a good day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfdHy8Vo4Og ("do you do your own taxidermy?")
Joanna Newsom - Inflammatory Writ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO84LE36kp8 (she makes up a lot of words, which i find cool)

Joanna Newsom - This Side of the Blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB23K9tT1JU ("Svetlana sucks lemons across from me, and I am progressing abominately"; this kills me everytime)
speaking of voices that people either love or hate, here's The Tallest Man on Earth. (also, fucking envious of his guitarplaying)

The Tallest Man on Earth - A Lion's Heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rEZqswF2oI (i once decided this song to be about Toby, my avatarian Dog)

The Tallest Man on Earth - Criminals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lWdwe5aCkk (that little chord-walk after the chorus fucking kills me everytime, that is so insanely good)

Re: Folkiness
Whoa. This is a good list. I've now got my music picked out for the next few days :) Jeez... I sit here and wonder how you all keep track of all this music in your heads. I have a hard time trying to remember 5 songs by Avicii or Two Steps from Hell, much less anything else! Thanks, O Wiki-master, Rhow :D

Re: Folkiness
We can put country-specific folk music into the country-specific threads (as it is done already for most Balkan countries), and also collect the 'Folk Music' (fiddle, 12-string guitar, sandals) here :D

Re: Folkiness
@Dr: not that impressive really. first of all, i wrote that list when i was at home, behind my laptop, with my music collection at hand. so when i dont know anymore i just look into my big "folkiness" directory for ideas. other than that, you can see the associative workings in the post itself. one sounds like the other, reminds me of something else, etc. simple :)
@Jules: as far as im concerned, i see all of these threads as categories, and an artist might be in both :)

There used to be a charity a radio station would give money to for requests on T-Day. This request cost $$$ since it's over 20 minutes ;)

^ it's also a very difficult song to get people to appreciate if they dont have the inclination to sit down and listen to the lyrics. but it is so rewarding when you do - funny, smart and a really catchy tune on top of that!

Re: Folkiness
My second cousin is in art school at a local uni and playing with music in his spare time. He tossed this sample to me this morning, and I guess it would be considered folk (?) (He needs to find another band name, as there is a half-assed troupe out of the Southwest called the same thing.) Sweetwater Junction - "Farther"
"It is not a finished project but a concept..." in his words. He has another snippet from another one he is working on, if anyone is interested.
On a relatively unimportant sidenote, Sweetwater Junction is where my Dad would take me fishing when I was younger :D

roald, thanks for the Lisa Hannigan. I first heard her on a Pandora channel; I think it might have been Ocean and a Rock -- I was painting in another room, but had to go see what was playing, and download what I could.
I am ashamed to admit that I first heard Feist on the Apple commercial that made her famous. She can sing, but she can't dance.

Re: Folkiness
@Dr: just listened to your friend's song. i think his playing is good, he definitely has an ear for nice melodic lines and making stuff work together. i think there is too little going on in the song currently to warrant it being over 4 minutes long, things get repeated too often, imo. i'd advise him to cut away non-essential stuff. also, it might need a bit of singing, but no idea if he plans on adding that at some point. anyway, it certainly isnt bad, but it sounds to me like somebody just trying to figure out what he wants to do instead of doing that thing and doing it well. there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, he should explore, it's good. just keep going and trust yourself :)
