Re: Arabic music
Two albums come to mind, although I actually do not listen to the genre very often. As I think about it, there is most likely tons of fantastic artists out there as Islamic culture is spread across most of the globe.
More of a traditional tune and feel, recorded live in the 60's. She was from Egypt, IIRC: أم كلثوم [Umm Kulthum] by Enta Omry
Then there is Wenu Wenu by Omar Souleyman which was introduced to me by an Israeli artist last year... the opening tune, "Wenu Wenu" happened to be his ringtone. Good stuff, although maybe not exactly what comes to mind when Middle Eastern music is brought up ;D

Fantastic. Classic Arabic music man. Yes, she was from Egypt. Enta Omry is the album, maybe it is even a song, I am not sure anymore because some performances are two hours. ;)Dr_Chroot wrote: More of a traditional tune and feel, recorded live in the 60's. Another one of my international favorites, Souad Massi from Algeria, living in France I think.

Re: Arabic music
just came across this on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/naji.aljerf/vi ... 453609642/
from the comments it seems to be "Dabke from Hima in Syria". that dancing is so insanely cool, almost like breakdance but with some other shit mixed in. really awesome, so i wanted to know more.
this got me on a youtube search where i ended up at Omar Souleyman (came for the dancing, stayed for the music). anyway, i came here to post about him, then noticed the Dr already mentioned him. nonetheless, i found he did a couple of Bjork remixes, and i really liked this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vEjKrP6tOs
actually, will post the FB-video in the Dancing-thread, which does not exist but will exist soon.
edit: there it is.
