Pop

Unread post by rhowaldt » Wed Feb 04, 2015 12:23 pm

this thread is for all those tracks you hear on the radio and are considered "Popular Music" (which is a fucking terrible term but okay). they are often tracks my elitist self tells me i should hate, but that i love nonetheless. guilty pleasures, as they say (although one wonders: where is the guilt, exactly? meh).
at one point i simply decided to stop hating on pop music if i secretly enjoyed the song, because i refuse to stop myself enjoying shit just because it doesnt fit my worldview or something. so there, you might hear some shit you think "really man? really?" - yes, really :)

Taylor Swift - Trouble: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJyKYt-5500 (live @ Victoria's Secret show, so plenty of eye candy. i fucking love it when that bass drops in - and yes, this is a prime example of how pop music borrows from other popular music genres, because that shit is blatant dubstep)
Taylor Swift - Shake it off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfWlot6h_JM (fuckit, this is just a great song)
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call me maybe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAQhG59zqZc - learned to love this through this video, the Chatroulette version. warms my heart.
Anna Kendrick - Cups: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmSbXsFE3l8 (yeah, a cover of a different Cups thingy, but i dont care)

Katy Perry - Last Friday Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4qGdIGJBzg (this song gets me ready for a party, in the rare event i am getting ready for such a thing)
Katy Perry - California Gurls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F57P9C4SAW4
Katy Perry - Dark Horse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i2-nmSnqOc (again, borrowing from popular EDM, in this case the drop of the beat is the Trap genre)

a bit older:
Backstreet Boys - Everybody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M6samPEMpM
5ive - everybody get up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZUn-KtTNmA (sorry Queen-fans ;)
Jewel - Foolish Games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNoouLa7uxA (dont care, this is one of the most beautiful songs i know)
Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN5c_uHRKIk (yes, even before seeing White Chicks, i loved this song)

so, i suppose that should set a precedent. don't think after this list anybody should feel ashamed of their musical tastes anymore ;)

As I listened through the list I had quite a few "so that is what that song was..." moments. You hear these playing from time to time in the mall or when you are out and about but rarely do I even hear the artist name.

As I look through charts and such, the only song in Spotify's Radio Top 40 that I have in my ~/Music is George Ezra's "Budapest". That one was pretty decent, actually.

(Most of what would be considered modern pop isn't interesting to me, as I feel like many are just playing with the same tunes and trying to throw more expletives than the other in hopes of getting the 2edgy4me crowd.)

I thought why not Rhow but then I saw this:
Backstreet Boys
Kidding.

There is some great Pop music I could enjoy but of course never really listen to it but e.g. Michael Jackson's:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzs9fsYpsjs

Madonna's Frozen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS088Opj9o0

Don't get me started on Madonna. :) I love her classics:

La Isla Bonita https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YzW1nMB9fk

Like a Prayer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDnUIXF2ly8

Ok, I will stop. Later guys.

@Dr: agree, i find most of the pop songs pretty bad. dont get me started on Black Eyed Peas. but sometimes there is something good in there, which is worth listening to. that Budapest track is decent indeed, but got on my nerves after hearing it repeatedly.

@ivan: i have this shit in a separate directory for when the mood strikes :) - Madonna did some cool shit indeed!

I think that this would be considered pop. Right?

Colbie Caillat - Try. i wanted to hate this song, but i cant. the lyrics are just good, and i cant help but love anything that spurs anyone into feeling better about themselves, especially young girls trying to deal with society's demands. so here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pu71k-K7mw (special non-Vevo video especially for Ivo ;)

All the 'Pop' I like tends to be kinda gay. You know, Simply Red, George Michael, Fiona Apple (okay, that's lesbian, but still).

Oh, and you can't do pop without The Purple One

.... I am sad to admit that I actually like some of this music that is considered popular. I thought only Dream Theater and Megadeth could compose decent lyrics - this stuff is actually not too shallow.

twenty one pilots - Car Radio
twenty one pilots - Stressed Out

Sort of a pop rap thing perhaps? I like the electropop feeling; it fit pretty well with the content of some of the songs.

No reason to be sad Dr_, you like what you like, and as long as you enjoy it it is ok. If others have a problem with that... I like a lot of what I call anti music, tech house, minimal techno etc that just goes ktjonk kjtonk ktjonk etc whatever. Nothing wrong with consumer pop, or whatever it is, as long as you enjoy it. Here is a golden oldie that I like, "Moonlight Shadow".
