if we're talking about 80s pop hits, we must have this one
(it was a huge deal in the US at least)

not a big hit -- not so much pop, either (more like punk) --
but one of the best by the same group:

I've always liked The Shins (no, not because of Garden State, but because of a dear friend of mine).
This is the record I got introduced to them with:

I don't know. In my ears rock and electro are different from this, and they're definitely not neither exotica nor jazz. ;-)

that's quite a decent song. amazing though how those videos all look similar, with the big white box lighting and skimply clothes and face close-ups and all that.

^Yes you are quite right about that. Maybe they all share the same studio and props, therefore they save money on production costs? ;) Yeterday I heard this classic from 1994, Edwyn Collins "I Never Knew A Girl Like You Before". Songs that have this kind of sound always give me this feeling of being ultra cool. Which I am... NOT! :(

i guess this counts as pop:
i am suddenly really really really into Sia's "Chandelier":

i know how it happened too. I watched some video of a dude singing it during a CS:GO match or so, and thought "hey that song actually sounds interesting", then checked it out, was blown away by the dancing in the video, and was done for. it's pretty bad in the sense that i played it for 2 days straight, multiple times during each evening. also listening to her other stuff, which also has some good shit in there.

I heard recently a couple of songs from Broods, which seems to be populair in New Zealand. I am not a regular listener when it comes to popmusic, but this one is catchy.

A bit unhappy about latest Vampire Weekend, mainly because I'm not sure this is the direction I was expecting from them.
I've been following them since their beginnings (they were still moderately unknown when I first saw them live opening for Blur at Hyde Park), and I've been collecting their records jealously. Their blend of exotica, afro-pop, and latin influences has made them very dear to me.
Now one of them (a vital member) has left the group, and they opted for a longer record, with a rhythm section more hidden than usual and a country shade which baffles me. It's closer to a Sufjan Stevens' record than a Vampire Weekend one, and although I love Stevens too, this is not necessarily a good thing for them.
