Goth

a slight disclaimer first: i am not very knowledgeable in this department. i'm just doing this thread because i was just introduced to music that falls in the goth department. mind you, we are not talking about "gothic metal" here (Nightwish, Trail of Tears, etc). we are talking about this.
now, since i don't know much about it, i see it has some connections to New Wave as well, plus a whole bunch of overlap. maybe somebody who knows their shit can clear this up.

anyway, my wife's best friend used to be really into this kinda music, and we were talking about it the other day and he told me about Sisters of Mercy. so i checked it out and i love it.

Sisters of Mercy - Neverland
Sisters of Mercy - Lucretia, My Reflection
Sisters of Mercy - More

he told me they have a 15-minutes long track that was being used for Satanic rituals. it is on some obscure EP, and from some Googling we gathered it might be a bootleg. he has it at home and will check it out for me - of course i wanted to hear that track :)

The only referential music that came to my mind from hearing this stuff was an old favourite of mine, this glorious track:
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead

Shameless spam: years ago I wrote something about this kind of music, calling it "dark wave", here it is: http://doyourealize.it/speciali/70-your ... -wave.html :-)

^ You're right, of course. I'm not into this music anymore, so can't be of much help. I leave you with some of my favourites:

Sisters of Mercy, definitely. Great band, fantastic music. Everything has its beginnings and later they destroy it with Goth Metal or whatever the like.
Of course, you can count some songs by The Cure, Black Sabbath (they are the reference for almost any kind of Rock music).

I know that Dead Can Dance is not really a Goth/Rock band but they were one of the acts in the Gothic department, too, even though they use unconventional instruments and electronic elements. Sometimes it sounds like some kind of dark world music and I love this group. I think I mentioned them many times here. The voice of Lisa Gerrard is splendid. I share some of my faves from them.

A long tune by Sisters of Mercy? "This Corrosion"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obzPPeHgHRQ

This is good a song to drive along with very fast late at night across barren wastes

Not goth exactly, but in the same "dark wave" vein (and funny too):

The Smiths, "Girlfriend in a Coma"

I can't believe I haven't touched this thread yet, so in honor of Halloween, a time of year that goths usually have mixed feelings about, I'll post a few links every night until Thursday. The two-fold reason being that I'm sure you guys don't want a perpetually undead/constantly updated goth music thread, but also because November 5th is the 72nd anniversary of the 1943 bombing of the Vatican. 72 being the average heartbeats-per-minute of an adult human, the number of languages spoken in the Tower of Babel (and the number of names of God according to Kabbalah), and also because the axis of the earth moves one degree every 72 years compared to stars and to the vault of heaven.

To start off, here are some tunes from various goth genres:

^ It's a classic :)

We had some goth/dark wave bands in the Netherlands too.
Probably the best example is Clan of Xymox
