^ In that case, would you call Jeff Beck's Nadia a cover? It's based on an age-old Indian/Hindu hymn, after all, which has be 'covered' endlessly over the centuries.
Personally, I feel that Hendrix's 'cover' (I prefer to call em interpretations) of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower brings a lot more than the original. I love Dylan as much as the next guy, but c'mon, Hendrix's version brought in a totally wider gamut of colour.

thelonious monk - straight, no chaser. seeing how we were talking (among other things) about playing piano... i love how loose this guy plays. i once heard that he went to play with Count Basie, and the Count kept getting annoyed by the Monk playing outside the rhythm :D - he just doesn't give a shit, and plays.

@wux
I googled "Gary Barlow". Seems he was a former member of a popular British boyband. That would explain a lot in itself, I suppose.
These kinds of artists usually get decisions made for them by their management or recording companies. Fangirls will lick them up regardless of quality.
Anyway, back to actual talent, and a cover of the timeless Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise. Probably not as well regarded as the versions by Coltrane or Davis, but just as much talent on display in this band. I had the pleasure of watching this chick (Hiromi Uehara) at a clinic a few years ago, and she blew my mind. Imho, no living pianist plays the keys as sensually as she does. The video isn't of great quality, nor is it the best example of the interplay the band (Sonicbloom) is capable of, sadly - guitarist (Dave Fiuczynski, respected in his own right) wasn't quite feeling it - but it's Youtube, after all. Jjust watch the way the chick improvs and modulates.

Also big LOL to the Japanese TV channel that spelled "Softly". XD

One of the things I've always loved about playing jazz is that you're free to REALLY improvise. "Oh this song is a ii-V-i in A?....well, screw that, I'm going to play the next 2 bars off-time, using ALL of the notes between each step."
The above is fantastic, BTW.

You need to watch Guthrie Govan play. Here's he mouths so much he grows an extra tooth at the end.rhowaldt wrote:@gutterslob: i love how the guitarist mouths his own solo! that is funny and nice to see :)

.... and yes, it's an improvised jam. They sit him down, let him listen to the backing track a couple of times, and then he does a few takes, each one completely composed on the fly.
.... and then they clean up the static and remaster the track and put it on Youtube, hoping to sell the backing tracks and tabs.
.... and then you buy the backing tracks and realize you can't ever improv/play like Guthrie.
.... and then you get depressed and give up.
Re: musics, bitches
'Guthries Erotic Cakes CD available'... sounds compelling as fuck!
i'm sad to hear you had such a bad experience trying to reenact that guitarplaying. if you are depressed, have a listen at the song i posted and find your happy inner child again.

Speechless. Imagine you open a restaurant and cook urine to sell it as soup. You wouldn't do that, would you? Same applies to singing.
