Almost 9 hours;
https://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast ... spx?id=530
Why didn't I post this in the electronica thread, you ask? Because the majority of it is funk, soul and disco, with only splashes of newer house tracks thrown in. No idea if I can survive this much disco/funk corniness, but I'm two hours in and haven't died yet, though I might've grown an afro without realizing.

^^ quite nice to see him using 1200's do the majority of DJ's still use wax ?
I was thinking that
ancient philips advert was true by now, does that not happen in real life?

Don't know if I goofed while linking or if RA changed the linkery, but the set I linked was actually the mix that was featured a week prior (I've edited that link now with the intended mix). Check it again to confirm, because I'm assuming (based on the date you posted) you went to the mix that got released a week after that, which doesn't have any soul or disco in it whatsoever.
Regarding DJ's still spinning wax, sadly no. Even those that love vinyl can't do it as often as they like simply because it's not practical - airline baggage allowance, poorly maintained turntables/consoles at clubs, etc. If you're a resident at a club that values this kind of thing, then yeah, but most selectors don't have that luxury. Many who still collect vinyl prefer to rip/digitize and just bring along SD cards or thumbdrives, since Pioneer CDJs are mainstays at most joints and all of them have USB and card slots now. Ironically, the newest flagship CDJ units don't even accept CDs anymore, despite the naming scheme.
While we're on the subject, I recently got the chance to play with an
Alpha Recording Systems rotary mixer setup; I think it's
this one. Possibly the best thing I've done in a while. The sound - playing vinyl on modded Technics turntables - was fucking divine!! Nothing I've used in my previous life, whether vintage/boutique rotary rigs or new-age Pioneermajigs, comes anywhere close. Can't even imagine how good their more expensive models sound.

^ I didn't think it was all /that/ funky, of course loads of vinyl on a flight would be rubbish.
+1 for "selectors"
wow what a bit of kit, have to believe your ears. no crossfader does look a bit odd. not for a scratch pervert then :)

^ Faders (and the crossfaders that followed) were mostly exclusive to bigger broadcast/mixing/production consoles in the early days. In that realm, faders were already displacing rotary knobs as early as the 1950s, not for sound quality but space constraints, initially - you could fit maybe six to eight vertical faders in the same width it took for three large rotary knobs.
RE: Crossfaders - here's some
interesting reading courtesy of Rane. Scratch/hip-hop culture was definitely the biggest catalyst with regards to putting crossfaders in smaller mixers.
A lot of the earlier establishments that played soul, funk and the 'queer' genres still employed rotary mixers even when faders were deemed more practical, possibly due to the more layered/measured nature of the mixing. Bozak was the first (also took cues from radio broadcast boards), followed by Urei. The guy who started ARS supposedly spent most of his working life servicing/restoring old Bozaks. It was only when the more energetic/visceral genres came into prominence (jungle, rave, early trance - coupled with the large outdoor festivals or warehouse parties which mandated more practical setups) that fader style mixers displaced the rotary ones in that specific subculture.

yeah, must have a monkey wrist to 'transform' on a rotary... nice for ambient shit I guess, get four tracks going and melt between them.
interesting reading, lost me at the graphs though. :)

I don't know how to call it. it's blues it's rock but I call it 'doing the dishes music'.
Original? Nope, but the sound of breaking glass or something else fits perfect.

This evening I told my son that a few Dutch radiostations were pirates back in the day. Large AM transmitters on ships and we had no (international) law that could stop them (till 1974). One of the tunes from a pirateship (Radio Noordzee) was Man of Action by Les Reed Orchestra. Detail, it was played while they were sending a SOS signal cause the ship was on fire (bombed in order of the Radio Veronica boss). But here is the tune..
