Purple was awesome before 1984 :D

I actually like their Mk 3/4 with Coverdale and Hughes. With today's ears it's maybe a bit too hairy, but the funkiness of the bass/drums section is still sexy (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gLkfJ00lvY or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0EydhI_m90).

Not so funky, their Stormbringer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc0Kxly8uM4

I am not quite sure what this is, but it is sort of metal-like?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX8CqfpGwzw

It needs to be played really really loud, or it just doesn't work

I don't know exactly what subgenre to categorize this as; maybe Progressive/Melodic metal? Grade-A stuff, nonetheless.

Amorphis - Sky is Mine (4:21)

Full Album: Skyforger (Playlist, so you are able to scrobble each track individually to last.fm, if you use the Chrome/Chromium scrobbler.)

So, Grandpa Frank was 88 when he peacefully passed away back in July with full mental faculties; he had a Mac desktop that he did crosswords on and browsed the Wall Street Journal and come to find out some YouTube and... /r/AskHistorians. He never talked about that, so I was quite shocked to find that he was a Redditor as well! Anyway, my Uncle is cleaning out some of his stuff and was in the process of moving the Mac out when he decided to take a look at Chrome's browsing history (according to Reddit, this is a bad idea) and claims that he found that the same YouTube video had been played a little over 600 times.

I can't tell you how surprised everyone is that he was a Sabaton fan, as we hadn't personally heard him play anything "harder" than Frank Sinatra. He was a quiet, kind older man who never talked about WWII, even if you asked him. He saw his first action on Omaha beach at 17 (claimed he was 18 when he enlisted) and liberated one of the concentration camps in Germany after losing toes to hypothermia in the Battle of the Bulge. When I was 8-12 I had a heck of time trying to get him to say anything about the war and quickly learned that he had been quite shaken up by it. Of the 80 or so fellows in his company, only him and three other guys survived D-Day and were thereafter reassigned into another company. He hadn't told us any of this, as we were only able to dig up biographies of those who were with him and official records. All that to say, everyone else in the family is shocked that he would watch Sabaton's "Primo Victoria" that many times.

Anyhow, all that to say, Sabaton has some good stuff:

^ Very interesting story. Maybe he needed to vent with that music if he watched it with scenes from D-Day. I cannot even imagine what he saw when he took part in it.

^^ interesting story indeed, thanks! puts the metal in a bit more perspective for me as well.

Found a nice gem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdzYL_UGkY0

Such A Surge, a German Crossover band, real Crossover, no New Metal shit. :) Defunct now. They have nice lyrics, especially the newer albums. This one is from the 90s, more left wing lyrics. I prefer them singing in German, their accent in English is a bit funny.

A playlist with some more songs.

No funny puns here. Just some really inventive/jazzy progressive metal.

I loved ISIS so much. Not listening to them as I used to, but I still love them.

Panopticon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLJ7zY9Ln3c
Oceanic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHtpU4aABPI (my favorite)
In the Absence of Truth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atCKkDusJkc
Wavering Radiant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BEry34VaKY

Saw them live in a small club in Bologna 6 years ago, they were really good.

^ tbh, i think Stevie plays the notes just right, but misses a lot of the feeling behind it. of course i am biased because i read Jimi's semi-autobiography and can now pretend to "get" him, but that's what i think.

Distortion Pedal (Metal Corner)
Stevie Ray Vaughan

...what the hell are you guys doing?

Brutal Truth: "Sugar Daddy". More grind. I recently picked up their entire discography, and it's good easy-listening.

Cerebral Bore: "The Bald Cadaver." Okay, I'd say that most of the time, women 'singing' in grind or death metal is a bit of a novelty item. On the other hand, there's this chick...wearing a Dying Fetus shirt (+10 points from me), and honestly killing it. I actually take her seriously, and am very impressed.
