@Rho, no worries, and @Dr, that little girl is so adorable.

I find it interesting the way that certain regions tend to specialize in their presentation of metal. Norway, for instance, pretty well cornered the market for blacker metals. Sweden tends to churn out more death metal, but as with everything, there are some exceptional examples that aren't quite predictable. For instance, Nasum, which is a Swedish grindcore band. They (much like Napalm Death and Brutal Truth) have been at it in some form for a long time, and in my opinion got tighter musically as time went on.

Cattle Decapitation - Your Disposal
Cattle Decapitation - Kingdom of Tyrants
I won't get into the politics of this band, but for those of you who are vegan/veggie or whatever, you might find it interesting that most of their songs are actually protesting the mistreatment of animals.

Beyond that, this is probably one of my go-to deathgrind bands, and lyrically placing humans into the proverbial shoes of animals is food for thought.

Listening to Deftones. Their latest, Koi No Yokan still sounds good to my ears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJgF-D4NJIM

Of course, White Pony will be my next choice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQAa2oxb5TM

^ Yes, I used to love it. Nowadays, though, I prefer Koi No Yokan. Maybe because I love ex-Quicksand Sergio Vega work on the rhythm section.

I used to trust the media
To tell me the truth, tell us the truth
But now I've seen the payoffs
Everywhere I look
Who do you trust when everyone's a crook?

Wow. I hadn't heard of Queensrÿche until now; they're pretty darn good. Just finished listening to Operation: Mindcrime and I have to say that they are pretty much as good as Dream Theater :D

Hey, you are more experienced in the postmodern art of deconstruction than I am, so I have to say you are probably right in this regard. I can't come near the depth of thought that you seem to be able to undertake when watching a film or listening to some dank jazz album. That said, I have deluded myself with three main reasons why I like Dream Theater so much :D

1) Because I love Mike Portnoy's drumming and John Petrucci mad guitar skillz :D

TBBH, I prefer Portnoy's drumming (sweet solo here) over Nicko McBrian (blasphemous, I know) but not more than Neal Peart. Petrucci has always impressed me, although I don't think I could put a finger on why. His solo in Japan was pretty cool.

2) Because I love the lyrical content. Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory was like an opera :D Each and every song on Images & Words felt perfect to me, as did Awake's. I don't care for any their albums after Metropolis, though. Once again, I don't think I could put a finger on why but I just do.

3) They have a Transatlantic vibe to them. Oh wait - Petrucci is the guitarist for both. Ok, maybe it's that. But they also had an impact on Spock's Beard, which is another of my favorite bands (Neal Morse - one of my favorite vocalists!), so that maybe why I have a bias towards DT :D

----

Speaking of the devil, Neal Morse just released The Grand Experiment - best song on the album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGM7MTxZpOE

^ I was kidding :)

I always felt like Dream Theater can't draw a line between good music and cold showmanship. I could say the same goes with some jazz musicians I can't take, but that's a rant I won't bother you with.

As usual, who cares, listen to what you like.

Actually, I really like Queensrÿche :D My uncle was best friends with the manager of a Christian band back in the 80's called Stryper - Queensrÿche is like a way better version of those guys. Great stuff.
