Re: The Root of Samples
Some education. I learned this when I was a DJ in the past life.
Quite often, you might think a certain song uses a sample from a certain other song, but that's not always possible due to legal or licensing issues.
What do you do? You solicit people like these: http://www.replayheaven.com/

Re: The Root of Samples
"Movin' n' Groovin'" reached number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1958; the opening riff, borrowed from Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," was itself copied a few years later by The Beach Boys on "Surfin' U.S.A.".

Chuck Berry sampled himself quite a few times :)
"No particular place to go" - "School Day" (Ring Ring Goes Da Bell)
for example :)

Re: The Root of Samples
...are we REALLY going to start on the "Rock n' Roll" "blues" "Rhythm n' Blues" rip-off train?
Because, if so, we need to find the first person who used a I-IV-V progression. Everything after that was a blatant rip-off. There has never been such a lack of creativity for such an extended period of time.
*Riff starts in E*
"Oh I am sad"
*switch to A*
"Oh I am sad"
*back to E*
"Oh I am sad"
*building tension with B*
"I tell you why!!!!"
*...to A*
"because"
*& back to E*
"WOMEN"
Play a few bars in E, then SURPRISE, A to B turnaround
Repeat^^. THIS IS LIKE 4000000000 SONGS! (I hate the blues.)

Re: The Root of Samples
@joe ... I guess there must be an awful lot of music you hate, in that case.
Generally, I like music to the extent that I can hear echoes of the blues in it...
Still, The Grill's a pretty open place. Room for more than one ghetto-blaster.

P.S. Hope you didn't get too trolleyed celebrating my birthday the other evening mb ;). Alcohol and women - work of the devil.

Re: The Root of Samples
i just listen to The Eagles and that's it. they use no samples, and all their songs have the most original chord-processions you have ever heard. fuck Pink Floyd, those guys are just ripping off <band Q> (who, incidentally, got all their shit from <composer D> - but let's not forget who originally started that, because all his shit was a blatant ripoff of <obscure dude Z>).
everything has been done before, and if anybody dares to do something new (such as, dunno, filling a bucket with their own feces then forcing an 8yo child to eat it) SHe will get scorned and bitched at and probably jailed and in troubles with child-protective services. Galileo all over again.
i like the blues, it makes me feel bluesey.
