TINYWM: Author (486) Release News

Unread post by machinebacon » Sat Feb 08, 2014 10:38 am

Updated version that fixes a little bug at very first start!

"Author" is a release for productive writing, quick note-taking, planning and organizing, featuring the extremely simple tinywm, and as addition, the improved SmallWM. This comes now with kernel 3.12 for 486 processors, but 686 and 686-PAE kernels can be easily added.

Features:
- tinywm / smallwm sessions
- vim full suite, including the fountain mode
- emacs24, with howm
- pandoc and markdown for document processing
- various applications for note-taking and planning
- all known BBQ tools, non-free firmware and drivers included
- noX session with emacs, vi or tmux
- framebuffer session
- new Xresources schemes (run "dkeger") and "mkmnt" fstab/mount script added

Keybinds:
Press Alt-F2 for an extensive 9menu popping up.
Alt-F3 opens dmenu.
Alt-Enter opens a new terminal.
Alt-F7 onscreen sysinfo
Alt-F8/F9/F10/F11 open alsamixer, volume up, volume down, volume toggle
Please refer to smallwm and tinywm's manpages.

No GTK dependencies, no qt packages. Very low resource usage, fits a small USB stick (512MB) without problems. Download size ~366MB, expands to 1.1GB and is perfectly suitable for low-end netbooks. Boot speed can be improved by installing systemd libpam-systemd.

The .xinitrc file is replaced by a wrapper called /usr/bin/start-wm -- please edit this file accordingly. By default, the startup opens several applications for a quick entry.

username and password are "bbq", install with "sudo bbqinstaller" or run live from a stick.

Being an author, you'd think that I would have homed in on this like a missile, but maybe I missed it because I was only skimming anything not amd-64. I'd been thinking of doing something just like this with Spring, but you beat me to it.

I'll bring all my authorial skills to bear and see if I can break it driving full-speed at night with my lights off.

^ cool, that would be great :)
All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.

Yeah, well, I did break it, bigger than squat. Locked me up solid, and I'm not sure why. I was playing around with the layout in start-wm and something I did locked it up solid. I've still got it on the stick, so I can try again later.

Little hint: every line should have a & at the end (except the last line that executes the window manager)
